The Curious Case of Force Ghosts

The Curious Case of Force GhostsForce Ghosts, Force Spirits, Blue Jedi Group…call it what you will, but they’ve had a complicated and varied history in Legends, as the ability for Force users to become one had editors and authors alike jumping from retcon to retcon as George Lucas decided to fill in the blanks slowly over time. Once those stories were placed aside for the new canon, Force spirit practitioners went from over 80 individuals to 5 (!), the process and ability to become a spirit stayed complicated but was given some clarity, while Force spirits have since been rarely touched on or discussed. In the Curious Case of Force Ghosts, I’ll be looking at how even though the whole idea of Force spirits got simpler, it has gotten equally more complicated (Yoda’s The Clone Wars arc helped on both ends), offering up curious questions including why Anakin Skywalker hasn’t made many visits (yet), and who’s still haunting around in the sequel trilogy. Strap in, unless you’re a ghost of course then float around at your leisure, as Detective Mynock is about take you on a ghoulish ride into the spirits of Star Wars where the answers might be more fleeting than any of us would like at the moment. UPDATE 12/18/17: I’ve included a section with details gleaned from the release of The Last Jedi. It’s full of spoilers, so don’t read it if you don’t want to be spoiled. Phasma’s hunt for the only person in the First Order who knows of her actions on Starkiller Base continues to get as brutal as she is, making issue #2 a riveting entry for the Captain Phasma miniseries. Continue reading “Canon Comic Review: Captain Phasma #2”

Luke and Leia Explore The Last Jedi’s Crait in Comic One-shot (UPDATED)

Storms of Crait 1 NewsCrait is a new planet to be first seen on screen in The Last Jedi, though recent YA novel release Leia – Princess of Alderaan took us there first. Releasing after TLJ on December 27, Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Storms of Crait #1 will reveal Luke and Leia’s visit to the planet pre-The Empire Strikes Back. The writers will be Ben Acker and Ben Blacker, with art from Mike Mayhew (Old Ben’s Journals #15, #20). Check out the full cover from Marco Checchetto below and my thoughts on how it might tie into the film. UPDATED: You’ll find links to interviews with the Ben’s and Mayhew regarding Storms of Crait below as well! Continue reading “Luke and Leia Explore The Last Jedi’s Crait in Comic One-shot (UPDATED)”

Canon Comic Review: Captain Phasma #1

Captain Phasma #1

Spoiler Review –

Curious to learn how Captain Phasma went from Starkiller Bases’ sole garbage chute occupant back to the frontlines of the First Order’s army? As part of the “Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi” initiative, Captain Phasma sets out to answer that question and it turns out, thanks to Kelly Thompson’s writing and the dynamic art from Marco Checchetto and colors by Andres Mossa, the garbage chute part looks to be the least important aspect of what might turn out to be quite the exciting journey. Canon Novel Review: Leia: Princess of Alderaan

Leia Princess of Alderaan

Spoiler Review –

Written by the fan-favorite (rightfully so) Claudia Gray, Leia: Princess of Alderaan is a Young Adult novel that’s part of the “Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi” initiative, taking place a couple years before A New Hope. It should come as no surprise I’m highly recommending another Gray novel, as she crafts a compelling tale of Leia’s journey into a larger world, the growing rebellion, and how it effects her and her family as the dangers of action and inaction become more real for all of them. Come for The Last Jedi tidbits, stay for the enthralling character piece. Continue reading “Canon Novel Review: Leia: Princess of Alderaan”

EW Uncovers Wealth of Secrets from The Last Jedi

Chewie and the Porg

Entertainment Weekly’s Fall Movie preview has plenty of The Last Jedi goodies, including a picture of Chewbacca and a Porg in the Millennium Falcon (seen above) and it’s just so damn adorable I just can’t even right now. Seriously, all they could’ve had for TLJ news was that picture alone and I’d be perfectly content. Thankfully, it’s not all they have, as they reveal Ahch-To’s Caretakers (grumpy old Scottish alien nuns!), that your Snoke theories won’t end, more details on Rose and Finn’s time together, of course some deep bits about Rey and Luke, a truly heartbreaking but beautiful memory of Carrie Fisher from Oscar Isaac and more! They normally roll it out over several days, but I waited until they finished and gathered it all here below for your convenience! Continue reading “EW Uncovers Wealth of Secrets from The Last Jedi”

The Last Jedi Behind the Scenes Featurette Unveiled at D23 2017 (UPDATED)

I found myself intrigued, confused, and patiently awaiting more after The Last Jedi‘s teaser at Celebration Orlando back in April, but I have to say, my excitement, hype, and trust we’ve got an amazing experience ahead with The Last Jedi is now through the roof after the above BTS featurette shown at D23 today (which, if you’ve been following the site Making Star Wars, there’s plenty here that confirms much of what they’ve been revealing for awhile now). From the space animals (foxes, horses, and porgs, oh my!), Rey in various Jedi garbs and fighting stances (one fight training sequence shows her against three opponents at once!), Poe, Finn, and Rose on various missions for the Resistance (including Finn and Rose going undercover in the First Order and what looks like Poe flying an A-wing like his mom!), new characters like Laura Dern’s Vice Admiral Holdo chatting with Leia and Benecio Del Toro’s “DJ” looking restless in a ship, the Canto Bight casino looking like the only casino I ever want to enter again, to Leia looking regal as all hell (and tears avoidably falling from seeing Carrie Fisher), this BTS footage will be a day long remembered for Star Wars fans. December 15 is even further away now after watching this a couple hundred times. Also, when are the Porg (those cute little penguin looking animals on Ach-to) plushies going on sale? I need at least 10…maybe more. Along with the rest of our The Last Jedi coverage below, check out some striking new character posters for TLJ and some official images from the panel itself! Vanity Fair’s The Last Jedi article features some absolutely fantastic photos from Annie Leibovitz and also happens to reveal the names of Laura Dern and Benecio Del Toro’s new characters, spends time remembering Carrie Fisher, gives details on the film itself, and introduces the new casino city called Canto Bight. Captain Phasma Novel and Comic Miniseries, Leia YA Novel, and Ken Liu Penned Luke Book Start Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi (SWCO 2017)

Journey to Star Wars The Last JediThe Lucasfilm’s Publishing Writer’s Roundtable on Friday was a pleasant panel where we got to spend some time with various authors across various mediums and age-ranges of material discussing their process and writing for Star Wars. It all ended with a bang, as the Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi initiative was announced (a similar program was in place for The Force Awakens), where hints for the new film will be hidden in the Phasma novel by Deliah S. Dawson, the Captain Phasma comic miniseries by Kelly Thompson, Leia: The Princess of Alderaan YA novel by Claudia Gray (!!), and Ken Liu’s (!!!) The Legends of Luke Skywalker, and much more! Details within and some additional insights from the Del Rey panel Saturday as well.

The Last Jedi Teaser and Panel Impressions (SWCO 2017)

“I only know one truth. It’s time for the Jedi to end.” Luke finally speaks in Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s first trailer and they are words no-one expected him to say (and they sent chills up my spine) and has gotten the theory wagon running wild on what will take place in the upcoming installment of the Skywalker Saga. Likewise, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Kathleen Kennedy, Rian Johnson, Kelly Marie Tran, and of course Mark Hamill all divulged a few new hints about the film, which ranged from exciting to haunting, much like the trailer. So go ahead, enjoy the trailer a few more hundred times and then read ahead for my impressions of the panel at Star Wars Celebration Orlando 2017 (which I finally wrote after I was done rewatching the trailer and stopped staring at the teaser poster we received for being at the show…both hard to stop doing).
