SDCC 2015: Marvel’s Chewbacca Series, Vader Down Crossover Event Announced

Chewbacca and Vader Down Series

Marvel’s Star Wars comics, outside of Kanan – The Last Padawan, have stayed in the nice little comfort zone of between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. While they have some “Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens” material coming (Shattered Empire and a C-3P0 series), they announced at SDCC 2015 they’ll stay within their comfort era awhile longer with a Chewbacca mini-series and the “Vader Down” crossover event (Update: Reviews for “Vader Down” begin!).

ChewbaccaThe Chewie series, named Chewbacca of course, has everyone’s favorite Wookiee crash-landed/is marooned on a planet during an important mission and finds himself teaming up with a young woman named Zarro and the local’s fight against the Empire (Update: Reviews for the series are in!). It will be written by Gerry Duggan (of Deadpool fame) with art by Phil Noto (who has been doing amazing unofficial/official Star Wars art and should be a well-known entity to comic fans), someone I’m very excited to have working on a Star Wars comic. They won’t be translating Chewie’s growls into basic, but I guess Duggan reports he’s been writing the dialogue twice: once in onomatopoeia and the other actually translated, though the latter will never be seen in print but is there just for the editor’s, Phil’s, and Story Group’s convenience. You can read several interviews with Duggan and Noto, which have some overlap, at MTV.com, Comicbook.com, and Marvel’s website. It’ll be at your local comic book shop starting October.

VADER DOWNIn November, the Darth Vader and Star Wars comic series get a crossover event which starts in Vader Down #1 then trickles out into the two respective issues. It centers on a story where Vader crash-lands/is marooned on a planet (hey, sounds like the Chewie series and Lords of the Sith) and is surrounded by the Rebels, who decide to take a shot at the lonely Sith Lord. He’ll be with Doctor Aphra, Triple Zero, and BT-1 though, which means the meetups we’ve all been dreaming about since these awesome new characters were introduced can finally happen: Han trading words with Aphra (the dark mirror of Harrison Ford’s other famous character, Indiana Jones) while C-3PO and R2 squawk and beep at their dark mirrors in Triple Zero and BT-1. For that alone I’m looking forward to this crossover event, something not seen in Star Wars comics very often (besides Dark Horses’ Vector event). Kieron Gillen and Jason Aaron, the writers of Darth Vader and Star Wars respectively, sit down and chat about the event and what they are most looking forward to writing/seeing on both the official Star Wars site and over at Marvel as well.
