Spider-Man Joins the MCU

Sony didn’t need to have Spidey-Sense to know the danger involved with digging themselves into an even bigger hole by continually floundering with their cinematic entries in the Spider-Man franchise and wisely struck a deal with Marvel for him to join the ever successful and popular MCU. A million fan-boys and fan-girls cried in joyousness shortly afterwards.

2007’s admittedly embarrassing Spider-Man 3 was the start of disappointing Spider-Man films, ending with last year’s overstuffed Amazing Spider-Man 2. The film felt more like a launch pad for Sony’s own Marvel universe with the few character’s rights it owns than a worthwhile sequel, so it’s no surprise after that failure Sony might finally try to latch onto the money-making cow that is the MCU. This deal’s not just beneficial for Sony, but for the fans as well as some of the upcoming MCU slate, like the Civil War story-line in the next Captain America, heavily involved the web-slinger in the comics (though Spider-Man’s appearance wouldn’t be much more than a cameo in the film at this point).

In the deal, there will be a new Spider-Man standalone film coming in July 28, 2017, which pushes dates around for some of the Phase 3 films announced late last year: Thor: Ragnarok moves from July 28, 2107 to November 3, 2017; Black Panther moves from November 3, 2017 to July 6, 2018; Captain Marvel moves July 6, 2018 to November 2, 2018; Inhumans (whose story just started in Agents of SHIELD) moves from November 2, 2018 to July 12, 2019. And yes, it’s crazy we’re concerned about movie dates 3-4 years from now, but that’s the beauty of the MCU.

But the most interesting part of his deal is the call from fans for our first cinematic black Spider-Man. This is not only a great idea because it helps differentiate this Spider-Man from the previous two, but it also helps soften the blow of both Captain Marvel and Black Panther (the MCU’s first black and female-led movies) being moved back to accommodate the web-slinger. Though along with rumors Marvel reportedly didn’t pay a dime to be able to use Spider-Man, Sony might be looking for a young high school aged kid for the next iteration, which would likely rule out Donald Glover, the fan’s most desirable choice for Spidey’s next screen appearance.

This deal does beg the question: Will Fox ever make a similar deal so the X-Men and Fantastic Four can play around in the MCU, too?
