Canon Novel Review by Chris: The High Republic – Tales of Light and Life

– Spoiler-free Review –

The High Republic is back, and Tales of Light and Life is leading the charge into Phase III by bringing together the past, present, and future of the initiative into one bound volume. And what a volume it is. If you’re a frequent reader here at the Manor, you know I absolutely loved Phase I of THR: I bought every variant of the novels (so, uh, four editions of Light of the Jedi and The Rising Storm; three editions of The Fallen Star, Out of the Shadows, and Midnight Horizonetc.) and a lot of the comic variants, but Phase II fell rather flat to me. Thankfully, Tales of Light and Life comes in blasters blazing, creating new, exciting possibilities for the initiative and getting me excited again for the future. – Spoiler Review –

The High Republic Adventures – Quest of the Jedi #1, written by Claudia Gray with art by Fico Ossio, takes us further back in the overall era than ever before, but what’s hidden in the past might hold big answers for the future. A riveting one-shot, I left this issue wishing for 12 more immediately, as I didn’t want it to end, so fascinating where the characters, world, story, and implications for the initiative’s story thanks to Gray’s writing and Ossio’s brilliant artwork. The High Republic Show: Phase II Novels, Comics, Art Book Announced, And More!

With the first Phase of The High Republic nearly at an end, the final comic issues dropping March, the latest The High Republic Show was focused more on how we got here, Krystina Arielle’s cool new digs and fan-made costume, and discussing much of what’s transpired since The Fallen Star‘s release in January, plus a suggestion on which piece to read to finish Phase I, Wave III. There were some reveals for Phase II: Quest of the Jedi, like who’s writing what, from Zoraida Córdova kicking off the new story with the adult novel and Claudia Gray behind a comic book, as well as a much requested and really exciting Art of The High Republic book, but it was focused mainly on the journey so far and teases of the future (5 or so years total in story) and I think it was well-deserved considering how fandom has accepted the initiative since its launch, though it also mentioned something fandom has been rallying against for sometime. Head on for the lowdown! Continue reading “The High Republic Show: Phase II Novels, Comics, Art Book Announced, And More!”
