Gotham Review: “The Mask”

Mask

– Spoiler Review –

Gotham returns to its case of the week format, with an entertaining one at least, in “The Mask” while it deals with the fallout of several events from last week’s rather great “Penguin’s Umbrella.” Too bad that it’s marred by the terrible relationship drama and a few other oddities that continue to cast a shadow over this show.

I probably should’ve done this more formally back when I called it quits with the show after its umpteenth break during the first season, but I won’t be reviewing this series anymore. I had been holding out hope the show would get better for the second season and the creative team behind it were saying all the right things, but the S2 premiere was just more of the same. Sure, there’s some promise for better things ahead in it so I’ll be tuning in, but this is more in regards to my own personal time constraints and my sanity. Sorry and thanks for checking out Mynock Manor for details on Gotham and I seriously hope the show hits its stride soon. We still have plenty of content on the site so browse around before heading somewhere else!

Gotham Review: “Penguin’s Umbrella”

Gordon's Silly Plan

– Spoiler Review –

With Gordon’s secret out, the forces that be descend down upon him for his grievous error, and he responds by carrying out a plan to clean up Gotham. Meanwhile, Penguin’s true motivations come into a surprising light and a lot players attempt to undermine one another. It’s unfortunate then, with all that takes place within “Penguin’s Umbrella,” that it ends basically back where we started.

Gotham Review: “Spirit of the Goat”

It's Starting Again

– Spoiler Review –

“Spirit of the Goat” gave us a Gotham that was comfortable in its skin and highly enjoyable, a real first for the series. Instead of a pretty standard police case, this one kept me guessing, as it teased a more comic book-like and possibly supernatural villain. “Spirit’s” more focused tale helped strengthen the procedural elements for once by not following around every character introduced thus far, but time spent with Cobblepot and Nygma fell flat this week.

Gotham Review: “Viper”

ATM Beggar

– Spoiler Review –

“Viper” sets Gotham back on a path I can enjoy, introducing a very familiar drug, moves players about in interesting ways, and has some guy crushed by an ATM. Can’t usually go wrong with that, which is unfortunate that the show still continues to stumble.

Gotham Review: “Arkham”

Arkham Asylum– Spoiler Review –

Gotham picks up a bit with “Arkham,” but its police procedural element is still its weakest part. The killer of the week and the police work were disappointing, but the characters (and the performances behind them) and their machinations continue to shine. However, some relationship drama misses the biggest mark this week.

Gotham Review: “The Balloonman”

Balloon Man Strikes

– Spoiler Review –

Gotham continues it’s streak of mediocre after last week with it’s newest episode, “The Balloonman,” though it manages to have a little more fun with it’s premise like the pilot did. The Mooney and Falcone subtle war heats up a bit, Barbara gets a bigger chance to shine, Bullock has an entertaining way with finding people, and the show really wants to hit the nail on your head that Bruce Wayne will be Batman…one day…just not in the show.

Gotham Review: “Selina Kyle”

Kidnappers

– Spoiler Review –

The Gotham premiere set up a series with a lot of potential, so it’s a shame the second episode “Selina Kyle” didn’t quite start delivering. It did have its moments, notably the quest stars, Gordon using his supposed sin to his advantage, and the late act appearance of the episode’s title character, but it continued the awkwardness found in the opener without ever fully expanding on each of its strengths.

Gotham Review: Season One Premiere

Gotham

– Spoiler Review –

Can a show, set in Gotham City, starring younger versions of Batman’s famous Rogues gallery and the seemingly incorruptible James Gordon, work without Batman? That’s been the million dollar question when it comes to Gotham, leaving some of the fans of the popular DC comic’s detective apprehensive, with others at least excited for a new take on familiar stories. Premiering to 8 million viewers (which doesn’t account for DVR usage), no matter their trepidation or excitement for the show, a lot of Bat-fans turned up to watch Jim Gordon get his first taste of Gotham City’s justice. While I did find the episode to be a bit clunky and a little too busy, the world-building and characters helped make for an engaging hour. But was it enough to hook me (and will it be for other viewers)?
