There have been short story collections in the Star Wars universe before, but nothing quite like this! From a Certain Point of View gathers together 43 authors for 40 stories giving us new perspectives on Episode IV: A New Hope, as a celebration of the film’s 40th Anniversary (bonus: all the author proceeds go to the charity First Book!). In short, the stories within had me crying, laughing, and filled me up with joyous wonder, much like A New Hope did and continues to do 40 years later, which is a pretty fitting way to celebrate the 40th anniversary, if you ask me! Thursday evening, Del Rey (at their @DelReyStarWars account) stirred up Star Wars fandom on Twitter by teasing the announcement of something called Operation Blue Milk. The hashtag, #OperationBlueMilk quickly blew up with speculation followed by various authors, some new and old to SW writing, revealing they were part of the project. While Amazon might have beat Del Rey to the official announcement, the details have finally been released and it’s a pretty exciting surprise: 40 different authors retelling events from A New Hope from random background characters’ points of view! Whether or not this is your cup of caf, you should probably pick this up because not only is the talent involved nothing short of spectacular, all author proceeds are being donated to charity (!!) so read on for the list and more details! To ring in the new era of Star Wars storytelling that starts with A New Dawn, author John Jackson Miller and his local Barnes and Nobel got together to host a launch event for the novel. Having seen Miller at a Star Wars Reads Day event last year, I knew the fans assembled would be in for a great time and again, he didn’t disappoint. And it begins. Announced earlier this year, we all found out that the Star Wars Expanded Universe (EU) of old was to be rolled over into Legends to make way for a unified story world and canonical EU. Along with the announcement came the reveal of four new books to herald in the new era, starting with John Jackson Miller’s Star Wars: A New Dawn. With a title that functions both as a signifier for this new era and a link to the plot, A New Dawn (AND) uncovers how the two main characters, Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla from the upcoming Star Wars Rebels, first meet while showing us the Empire’s growing grasp on the galaxy far far away. And while the action stays relatively small, much like Miller’s excellent Legends novel Kenobi, the characters are strongly written within a finely plotted novel making A New Dawn a very entertaining read for both old and new Star Wars readers.

Westerns and I have had an on and off again type of relationship. I don’t necessarily hate them and I won’t go out of my way to indulge in them, but I don’t mind a few from time to time. Growing up, my father seemed to have high hopes my brother and I would follow in his footsteps and idolize John Wayne, a film called The Magnificent Seven, and Mr. Eastwood. I turned out to be the farthest from when I took up my love affair with Star Wars, but for the first time in a long, long time, we’ve found common ground: Kenobi, written by John Jackson Miller. While horror was added to the GFFA wonderfully in Death Troopers, I had my initial misgivings about putting a more straight-up Western in Star Wars. After having read Kenobi twice already, it’s hard to understand why I was so worried.

Star Wars Reads Day has returned, largely thanks to its success and no-brainer goodwill in its promotion of reading. All across the county there were numerous events being held at bookstores and libraries, but if you didn’t want to leave home, you could always celebrate by your imaginary fireplace all snuggled up with a Star Wars book/comic. Not content to just read this year, I had seen the author John Jackson Miller (Kenobi, Knight Errant, Knights of the Old Republic comic series, Lost Tribe of the Sith) was going to be in Madison, WI at a local Barnes and Noble, so I hopped in my car and made the trip from Milwaukee.
