In issue #1, Chelli Aphra recruits Luke Skywalker for her own nefarious purposes and the two quickly find themselves in more danger than either realizes. Marvel Star Wars Panel Impressions (SWCO 2017)

Considering the news of the Captain Phasma miniseries dropped in a different panel, Marvel’s panel was light on news but showed off some interior art for some upcoming issues and there were fun chats with creatives and editors alike. The most interesting thing to come out of the panel is that us in attendance might of sort of convinced the Marvel powers that be to make an Ahsoka series? Details below!

Captain Phasma Novel and Comic Miniseries, Leia YA Novel, and Ken Liu Penned Luke Book Start Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi (SWCO 2017)

The Lucasfilm’s Publishing Writer’s Roundtable on Friday was a pleasant panel where we got to spend some time with various authors across various mediums and age-ranges of material discussing their process and writing for Star Wars. It all ended with a bang, as the Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi initiative was announced (a similar program was in place for The Force Awakens), where hints for the new film will be hidden in the Phasma novel by Deliah S. Dawson, the Captain Phasma comic miniseries by Kelly Thompson, Leia: The Princess of Alderaan YA novel by Claudia Gray (!!), and Ken Liu’s (!!!) The Legends of Luke Skywalker, and much more! Details within and some additional insights from the Del Rey panel Saturday as well.

Doctor Aphra and Star Wars Comics Star in Marvel’s The Screaming Citadel Crossover

When I first saw the announcement, I thought it was a joke, as The Screaming Citadel sounds like something out of a campy horror B-movie. Thankfully it wasn’t though, as it sounds like Marvel’s next crossover (the first being Vader Down) looks to embrace the title’s tone and give us a gothic-horror story set in the Star Wars universe. Even better, it’s a crossover of the mainline Star Wars series with my absolute favorite comic character to date, Doctor Aphra! Canon Comic Miniseries Review by Chris: Obi-Wan and Anakin (#1-5)

You know, for being one of the most maligned movies in the entire Saga, The Phantom Menace really did a lot of things right and has given the canon quite a bit of great material to work with. It introduced us to angsty Anakin Skywalker, and a youthful Obi-Wan Kenobi, and gave us a look into the formation of a friendship that would end on the Death Star before the Battle of Yavin. Not only that, but The Phantom Menace kicked off the story of Darth Maul, starting from his astounding reveal on Theed, followed up by his audacious plan for revenge during the Clone Wars, and we see him again as a primary villain during the Dark Times again. The Gungans have shown up again in some wonderful arcs like the war between the Aqualish and the Mon Cal warriors, they’ve shut down General Grievous, and we were all excited to see a worthwhile Gungan bounty hunter in the Star Wars flagship comic title. In the same vein of picking up The Phantom Menace‘s many cool story ideas, Obi-Wan & Anakin develops the blossoming relationship between Anakin, a newly minted Jedi, and Obi-Wan, as stoic and duty-bound and trustworthy as ever, as they travel to Carnelion IV, a world torn in half by war. This series, set four years after the Battle of Naboo, is able to explore the riches of the relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan in a fresh way by dialing the clock back to the first crisis in their relationship as Master and Padawan. Canon Comic Review: Obi-Wan & Anakin #5

The titular Jedi of Obi-Wan & Anakin not only bring a tentative peace to the planet of Carnelion IV in the series’ finale issue but we see just how far the Master is willing to follow the Padawan no matter his decision to leave the Jedi Order or not. Issue #5 wonderfully closes several hanging threads, brings an end to this entertaining character study of a series, and makes one wish there was more. Canon Comic Review: Obi-Wan & Anakin #4

Obi-Wan & Anakin issue #4, written by Charles Soule, art by Marcho Checchetto and colors by Andres Mossa, provides some much needed answers on the mystery of the Open and Closed of Carnelion IV, but it opens new ones at the same time. There are a few other reveals, including (definitively) why Anakin wants to leave the Jedi Order and who sent the distress signal, while the flashbacks between Anakin and Palpatine continue to steal the show. As has been the case in these first four issues, this is a series well worth a read, especially for fans itching for more Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Palpatine drama. The Obi-Wan & Anakin miniseries got off to a promising start in its first issue by introducing us to an intriguing Mad Max-like planet, Anakin having doubts about becoming a Jedi, and Palpatine asking to meet with the young Padawan. Issue #2 not only builds off those promises, but it takes them in even more exciting directions than I previously imagined, especially with Palpatine taking Anakin under his wing. Canon Comic Review: Obi-Wan & Anakin #1

Out of all the comics so far released, I haven’t really anticipated any of them, but certainly enjoyed most, if not all of them. Obi-Wan & Anakin is the first one I’ve been eagerly awaiting and issue #1 sets up many things which could promise to make it more than I ever hoped for: Master and Padawan visit what basically amounts to a Mad Max planet in the Star Wars universe and there’s a slight twist to Anakin’s training, two things I can’t wait to see explored before the miniseries comes to a close.
