Video Game News Roundup: Battlefront II Campaign Trailer, Beta Impressions and Visceral Games’ Project “Shifting” (UPDATED)

With less than a month to release, we’ve finally been treated to the first singe-player focused trailer for Battlefront II, which just recently finished its multiplayer beta. I have some impressions from the Beta experience (no video this year, sorry!), which was bigger, better, but contained some concerning aspects (progression, loot boxes). And in very disappointing news, Visceral Games has been shut down, their Star Wars game shifting to a different studio and direction, with Amy Hennig’s participation in question. Update: 10/28: Clearer details on why the game collapsed have been unveiled, so: Read on for more details! EA Provides Minor Updates on Upcoming Star Wars Video Games from Visceral Games, Respawn Entertainment, and More

The above video was released at EA Play’s E3 2016 Press Conference, showing off very brief glimpses into the upcoming future of Star Wars video games from Visceral Games, Respawn Entertainment, Motive, Capital Games, DICE, and Bioware. Shortly after, a blog post at EA.com went live, with a few more details, including a timetable. Unfortunately there wasn’t a lot revealed and what little was shown was mostly underwhelming, but there was some nice teases in regards to both Visceral and Respawn’s games, and I’ve got more details below on all that’s coming. A Good Blaster At Your Side: The Future of Star Wars Video Games (Part 3)

A Good Blaster At Your Side: The Future of Star Wars Gaming (Part 3)Jedi usually mean big things: battles aboard Death Stars, planets destroyed, seats of government changed, galaxy-wide conflicts, etc. But if the non-Jedi mini-story focus of the first Anthology film Rogue One is anything to go by, there’s a push away from big spectacle to smaller focused stories for everything Star Wars without an Episode number and I feel like the same will be true for the beginning of EA’s video game content: expect games with a single player campaign (i.e. not Battlefront) to, at least at first, give the game’s protagonist a good blaster at their side instead of the mystical lightsaber. Lead Uncharted Writer Joins Visceral Games Star Wars Project

Amy Hennig

I originally posted this on Knights’ Archive, early April 2014.

I almost had a heart attack, jumped around for joy, and yelled, “Wizard!” and actually meant it, when I first heard this next bit of news. And while you might not have the same reaction when you heard it, I’m going to do my best to make sure you realize why I did. Amy Hennig, known most recently and awarded a lot for the Uncharted series of video games on the Playstation 3, has joined Visceral Games as Creative Director for their upcoming Star Wars project.
