Canon Comic Review: Darth Maul #3

Darth Maul #3

– Spoiler Review –

I had my initial reservation about this mini-series, but by the end of issue #3, I can honestly say Darth Maul has turned out to be an enjoyable experience especially thanks to its colorful cast of underworld characters. Continue reading “Canon Comic Review: Darth Maul #3”

Darth Maul #2

– Spoiler Review –

The first issue certainly had me split in halves (see what I did there) over whether or not to continue reading the series, but Darth Maul issue #2 introduces some old, dearly missed faces and contains a surprising flashback that have me actually excited for more. Darth Maul #1

– Spoiler Review –

The renewed focus on Darth Maul might have come a decade after his overly memorable introduction (and quick execution) in The Phantom Menace, but he’s proven himself to be a multi-dimensional character ever since, arguably the biggest reason for his continued existence to be worthwhile. While a lot of eyes might be focusing on the upcoming outcome of his big showdown with an old foe in season 3 of Star Wars Rebels, Marvel takes us back before it all started with the second Maul-led comic series, simply titled Darth Maul. In the end, neither issue #1’s portrayal of the younger, feral Maul nor its copious set-up make me want to recommend going out and buying this right away, though the potential for this series to be something more is hiding beneath the surface, just like the Sith themselves. Darth Maul Comic Series Set to Unleash the Sith in February 2017

Darth Maul Comic Series LogoYou cut a guy in half and you’d think that’d be the end of it, but if Darth Maul has proven anything over the past 7 years, it’ll take a helluva lot more to put him down. While we’re currently exploring his extended fate in Star Wars Rebels’ 3rd season, next year we’ll be treated to a comic series exploring his past pre-The Phantom Menace. While there isn’t enough information yet for me to really feel one way or another regarding Darth Maul, check out the details released so far below the cut. Canon Comic Review: Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir #4

Son of Dathomir #4

– Spoiler Review –

We have reached the end. Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir is part of the end of the Dark Horse era of Star Wars comics and this is its final issue. It’s also a look at Darth Maul’s possibly final arc from The Clone Wars and his fate, along with Mother Talzin’s, hangs in the balance as Darth Sidious descends upon his former apprentice and old confidante to settle things once and for all. It’s interesting to note that, while settling a number of hanging story threads, this series ends with almost as many questions as it had when it started. However, these questions, combined with #4 still being a great read, gives the Son of Dathomir series quite the send-off.

Dealing with the repercussions of his failure, Dooku must try his best to be civil with his captor Darth Maul, while the Jedi get involved when word comes down Sith were part of the Ord Mantell battle. While Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir #3 doesn’t have as many payoffs as the last issue, it certainly sets the stage for an explosive finale. Son of Dathomir #2

 – Spoiler Review –

With the first issue setting up lots of potential big moments with characters The Clone Wars either breathed new life into or brought to everyone’s attention, it falls on the second issue to pay some of the setup off while continuing to move the plot along. For Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir #2, it has payoffs in spades and even bigger setups than I could’ve possibly imagined. It definitely makes me wish even more so that these episodes of The Clone Wars got to be part of the ‘Lost Missions’ (Season 6), but I’m just immensely happy we’re seeing it in one form or another. – Spoiler Review –

It’s still a bit of a shock that we originally left Maul separated in two pieces lying at the bottom of some seemingly endless shaft on Naboo to suddenly watching him wreak havoc on the galaxy in The Clone Wars. It was even more shocking when TCW was cancelled and somehow his fate continued to be up in the air. Thankfully, someone had the good sense to adapt his unaired/unproduced final arc in TCW into a limited comic series. And while the first issue isn’t grand, it is thrilling and certainly feels like an episode of the show. Continue reading “Canon Comic Review: Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir #1”
