Canon Comic Retrospective: Doctor Aphra Series {Issues 1-40} (Volume 1)

Doctor Aphra Volume 1 Retrospective

– Full Spoiler Review –

I’ll never forget watching Doctor Aphra stuffed in an airlock, me chanting alongside her, “Please, not like this!” as Darth Vader promptly jettisons her out into space, her body floating into the cold depths of space. I was shocked, frustrated, and sad, barely able to finish the next few pages of Darth Vader #25 (Vol. 1), flipping past the credits in annoyance, only to see she somehow finagled together a plan to survive. Shortly after, her on-going comic series was announced, the first comic created character to lead her own series (among many other firsts), and my relief and excitement almost had me bursting out into happy tears compared to my sad tears moments before. 40 issues, and 3 Annuals later, Aphra continuously finagled a new way to survive out of the most unlikeliest of scenarios, hopping from one get rich quick scheme to another, but now her adventures (at least in Volume 1) have come to an end. Canon Comic Review: Star Wars #32 – The Screaming Citadel Part 4

Star Wars #32 - The Screaming Citadel Part 4

– Spoiler Review –

Star Wars #32 is Part 4 of The Screaming Citadel crossover and it is the zaniest and most enjoyable issue yet! Triple-Zero falls in love (?!?), the symbiotes bring plenty of screams, and Doctor Aphra makes a surprising (for her, at least) decision. Canon Comic Review: Doctor Aphra #7 – The Screaming Citadel Part 3

Doctor Aphra #7 - The Screaming Citadel Part 3

– Spoiler Review –

The fun and excitement of The Screaming Citadel crossover continues to build in Part 3 – Doctor Aphra #7! The reunion of Sana and Aphra is better than expected (and deadlier!), all the characters together is a blast (even if Leia feels slightly off), and despite the art feeling a bit out of place, things get even more out of control than I imagined was possible, making this another fine entry into what’s shaping up to be a memorable crossover. Canon Comic Review: Star Wars #31 – The Screaming Citadel Part 2

Star Wars #31 - The Screaming Citadel Part 2

– Spoiler Review –

The Screaming Citadel crossover continues in Part 2 – Star Wars #31! Despite a new creative team for this portion of the crossover, none of the charm from Part 1 is lost and things spiral, ever entertainingly so, even more out of control for Doctor Aphra and Luke. Canon Comic Review: The Screaming Citadel #1 – The Screaming Citadel Part 1

The Screaming Citadel #1 - Part 1

– Spoiler Review –

Doctor Aphra and the Star Wars series collide in Marvel’s second crossover event, The Screaming Citadel! In issue #1, Chelli Aphra recruits Luke Skywalker for her own nefarious purposes and the two quickly find themselves in more danger than either realizes. Before the danger looms, be prepared to get drunk on laughter as writer Kieron Gillen provides an effortless set up issue that is over long before you’d want it to be, providing plenty of character and plot to look forward to as the crossover unfolds. Marvel Star Wars Panel Impressions (SWCO 2017)

The Screaming Citadel CoversConsidering the news of the Captain Phasma miniseries dropped in a different panel, Marvel’s panel was light on news but showed off some interior art for some upcoming issues and there were fun chats with creatives and editors alike. The most interesting thing to come out of the panel is that us in attendance might of sort of convinced the Marvel powers that be to make an Ahsoka series? Details below!

Panelists: Jordan D. White (Editor), Heather Antos (Supervising Editor), Charles Soule (Lando, Obi-Wan & Anakin, Poe Dameron), Phil Noto (Poe Dameron, Chewbacca), Matt Martin (Lucasfilm Story Group), and John Tyler Christopher (action figure cover variants). Doctor Aphra and Star Wars Comics Star in Marvel’s The Screaming Citadel Crossover

The Screaming Citadel AnnouncementWhen I first saw the announcement, I thought it was a joke, as The Screaming Citadel sounds like something out of a campy horror B-movie. Thankfully it wasn’t though, as it sounds like Marvel’s next crossover (the first being Vader Down) looks to embrace the title’s tone and give us a gothic-horror story set in the Star Wars universe. Even better, it’s a crossover of the mainline Star Wars series with my absolute favorite comic character to date, Doctor Aphra! Check out some choice details below to find out what awaits you dear comic reader when the crossover begins this May. UPDATE: Marco Checchetto, who will have artist duties on the one-shot start to the crossover, shares some new character designs, so check that out below too!
