Vanity Fair’s The Force Awakens Cover Shoot Reveals New Characters (UPDATED)

As has become the seeming tradition starting with the prequels, Vanity Fair has a Star Wars: The Force Awakens cover for its June issue. Within the issue are pictures from photographer Annie Leibovitz, which capture some of the well-known characters while also revealing images of the actors and actresses Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, and Lupita Nyong’o in their roles for the film!
The Force Awakens Vanity Fair CoverThe link above has just a small snippet of the full cover article to be released with the issue on May 7th (online) and May 12th (nationwide bookshelves) and it’s basically a few moments of an interview with J.J. Abrams, who discusses the practical effects (again) and more interestingly, Harrison Ford’s acting, which according to Abrams, “There was a fire in his eyes that you see in the movie.” UPDATE: Here’s a longer interview of JJ, independent of the full article.

But as May the 4th went on, Vanity Fair started to unveil some of the photos included in the shoot, while confirming which characters Lupita Nyong’o, Adam Driver, and Gwendoline Christie all play:

Adam Driver is Kylo Ren, something a lot of rumors had pinned him down for as of late. Aside from his brief appearance in the video above, his photo has a few interesting tidbits hidden in its caption: “…commands snowtroopers loyal to the First Order on the frozen plains of their secret base,” (the emphasis being mine). Combine both parts and they hint at the First Order being a splinter group of the Empire, or at least of a yet-unknown third party in galactic politics. Especially since the Rebellion is now the Resistance, both the above caption and the Resistance name definitely make me wonder how many factions there will be vying for control of the galactic government. Storygroupie on Tumblr, i.e. Pete Morrison of Rebels Report, has a really good dissection of what could possibly be going on in galactic politics around TFA’s time.

Denizens of Maz Kanata's castle

Lupita Nyong’o plays a C.G.I. character Maz Kanata, a pirate who has her very own castle. Besides a few shots of Lupita with face tracking dots on and a look at the rogue’s gallery inhabiting Kanata’s castle, nothing else was revealed. As for Gwendoline Christie, she was first scene in the 2nd teaser as Captain Phasma, the ‘chrometrooper’ with the cape. She’s loyal to the First Order as well, but that doesn’t mean everyone on the First Order’s side is evil. Intriguing…

They’ve also included scans of the prequel photo shoots, in case taking a trip down memory lane interests you.
