Canon Comic Review: Star Wars Adventures: The Clone Wars – Battle Tales #2

Star Wars Adventures The Clone Wars Battle Tales #2

– Spoiler Review –

The Battle Tales return! Fans of the Plo Koon, Commander Wolffe, and his Wolfpack (so you know Dave Filoni has read this issue a million times already) won’t be disappointed with The Clone Wars – Battle Tales #2, nor will most other fans!

Star Wars Adventures The Clone Wars Battle Tales 2 Full CoverWith the Jedi tied up with Count Dooku and Asajj Ventress, Koon sneaks away to send his trusted Commander Wolffe the location of the planet’s captured parliament. This is still very early in the war, so the clones aren’t certain if they should proceed without their Generals yet, but then Wolffe steps in with a tale about Plo Koon’s trust in his men. Not too long before, Koon puts the most important part of a mission to retake a vital station in the hands of the Wolfpack. There’s some great sequences in the flashback, with the clones flying around with jetpacks and facing the flying D-wing battle droids, to how Wolffe stops Wat Tambor and his Separatist forces, and it makes for an action-packed, quick tale. It’s also a good show of how the Jedi were so trusting of the clones and willing to help them grow and learn, but also that, at one point, they did care to make sure those under their command all made it out alive even if the objective wasn’t met perfectly.

Once again, there are two art teams, one for the framing story and the other for Wolffe’s story: On the framing’s art is Derek Charm, with Luis Antonio Delgado on colors, while Wolffe’s tale has Megan Levens on art and Charlie Kirchoff for colors; lettering on both is Jake M Wood, keeping it all coherent! Per usual, Charm is a charm with his style, and Delgado’s colors complement it wonderfully, and I really appreciate how they hue close to TCW designs but retain their own style, especially with a character like Count Dooku. As for Levens and Kirchoff, the action was colorful and easy to follow, while I liked the amount of time Wolffe had his helmet off, allowing him to emote more under the teams great work. In fact, it shows Wolffe without his trademark scar, so early in the war, and Levens still managed to make him recognizable. And like I said above, writer Michael Moreci’s ability to write these episodes and let them feel like a continuation of the show makes this series even more of a joy.

Here are a few other things:

  • With the comic release schedules being updated, it looks like Battle Tales issue #3 will be out in July and issue #4 in August, but it’s still not clear when we’ll get issue #5.
  • Don’t forget, before this series’ original release, we interviewed writer Michael Moreci!

The Clone Wars – Battle Tales #2 carries on the legacy of the show, much like its great opening issue.

+ Continues feeling like the show

+ Delightful story

+ Art excels in both parts again
