Canon Novel Review by Chris: Brotherhood

Brotherhood Review MynockManor Chris

Authors of Star Wars book, “more to say, have you”, on the Clone Wars? Seems hard to believe, seeing how much material has already been created focusing on the era. Specifically, seven seasons of a TV show, a handful of comic mini-series, and the beginning and end of the second Prequel films, and plenty more have explored the Clone Wars. My first reaction to hearing that Del Rey was going to be producing yet another Clone Wars story was met with more “…huh, okay” from me than an enthusiastic welcome. And, unfortunately, the nature of From a Certain Point of View stories meant that I couldn’t remember Mike Chen’s entry in the anthology well. Thankfully, my trepidation and forgetfulness was negated by what turned out to be a well-written, engaging novel: Star Wars Brotherhood! Continue reading “Canon Novel Review by Chris: Brotherhood”

Canon Novel Review: Brotherhood

Brotherhood Review MynockManor Ryan

Slight Spoiler Review –

Brotherhood, written by Mike Chen, taps into a unique point in Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker’s life, just after the events of Attack of the Clones as the war builds and their Master and Apprentice roles change, and reveals how the two adjust to their new lives due to some business on Cato Neimoidia. Thanks to some intriguing new characters that challenge the pair’s ways and our perceptions of them and other aspects of Star Wars, as well as beautiful, lush, and sometimes haunting prose, Brotherhood secures itself a spot in a select pantheon of memorable and engaging top-notch Star Wars books. Slight Spoiler Review –

What started as a Padmé-focused endeavor grew larger in its second outing, the “Queen Trilogy” ends with a smaller scope in Queen’s Hope, and while it reined in some issues from the second outing and feels more like the first, this trilogy ends with what feels like half of a good novel. High Republic Midnight Horizon Review Mynock Manor

Spoiler and Spoiler-Free Review

The High Republic – Midnight Horizon, written by Daniel José Older, is the final novel entry in Phase 1, Wave III’s story, and it’s the best overall to date. Focusing on a plot around Corellia and potential Nihil forces, several Jedi characters from Older’s and other luminous authors’ works combine in a tale with new characters and tons of emotion, depth, and exploration of oneself, as there’s coming-of-age, love, and Jedi paths plumbed for some of the best character work of the era yet. The following review is largely spoiler free but there’s a clearly marked spoiler section as well! Continue reading “Canon Novel Review: The High Republic – Midnight Horizon”

High Republic Mission to Disaster Review Mynock Manor 1

Spoiler Free Review –

The High Republic’s first Phase is coming to a close and Mission to Disaster, written by Justina Ireland, is one of the opening novels of the final wave. Focusing on characters Ireland first introduced in the opening wave, the novel deals with Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh trying to save Avon Starros, and other children, when it becomes clear the Nihil have started kidnapping kids to bolster their ranks. Mission to Disaster, never shying away from the ramifications and its deeper subject matters, while adding to fan-favorite characters and building out a convincing ecosystem,  is one of Ireland’s best entries of the era so far. High Republic Fallen Star Review Mynock Manor 2

Slight Spoiler Review –

The beginning of the end to The High Republic‘s first Phase of content kicks off with Claudia Gray’s The Fallen Star, a riveting novel full of hope, heartbreak, and terror, that grips you in its tension-filled opening pages and doesn’t let up, offering moments of levity giving readers a breath before pulling them back in. It’s a fitting, important ending to the hope-filled beginning of the era a year ago, setting the stage for what’s yet to come in Phase II and beyond.
