Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Golden Rule

Obi Wan Kenobi Riding Sad

Editor’s Note: Since we are a Manor, we’ve been known to hosts Guests from time to time. Our latest visitor, C.W. McClain, offers his views and opinions on “show, don’t tell” moments from the Saga and the Obi-Wan Kenobi show! If you’d like to be a Guest, visit our submission page on how to start the process!

That moment in A New Hope when Luke Skywalker finds the burnt remains of his family and their moisture farm was painful to watch. Seeing the utter devastation wrought by the Empire upon an innocent family brought home a bitter reality: the Empire is ruthless and savage. This is a “show, don’t tell” moment. Beforehand, nobody bad-mouthed the Empire. Nobody talked about how bad they were. The audience is shown and that makes it all the more real. That, in turn, means we can connect with it better. It’s one thing to be told about a character or concept in a story. It is another thing entirely to experience it. Continue reading “Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Golden Rule”

Lucasfilm Showcase Panel (SWCA 2022)

Skeleton Crew Announcement.jfif 1

Since 2015’s Celebration Anaheim, there wasn’t quite been a weekend opening panel like the one with The Force Awakens’ trailer, and well, the Lucasfilm Showcase Panel for Anaheim 2022 wanted to say “hold my spotchka!” but it didn’t quite get there, due to focusing on non-Star Wars projects and by denying this panel to everyone at the convention minus those in the room, it could never quite permeate the weekend like SWCA ’15’s did even if it had a similar show-stopper. Let’s take a moment to address how disappointing, massively so, that they gate-kept this panel from those at home by choosing not to stream it (and the rest of the weekend’s opening panels), with only The Mandalorian’s S3 footage not being shown online anyways, screwing over international fans, fans who can’t come out due to health reasons, fans that can’t come due to COVID and wars, or even just monetary reasons…it’s an extremely inept choice in 2022, especially due to one short teaser, and I wish I could bet on Lucasfilm doing better but I don’t have much faith (like, let us at home pay to watch, even!). That out of the way, head below for the Andor trailer, Jude Law headlining 2023’s Skeleton Crew, and the non-Star Wars news, I guess! Continue reading “Lucasfilm Showcase Panel (SWCA 2022)”

Vanity Fair Lifts Veil on Lucasfilm’s TV Future

Vader Reva and Obi in Vanity Fair Shoot

With a little over a week before Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2022, Lucasfilm partnered with Vanity Fair on an article pulling back the first layers on what’s to come from its live-action slate of TV and movies. While the latest photoshoot and article don’t uncover anything largely new, besides the announcement of a new show already rumored, plenty of intriguing details about shows like Andor and The Acolyte, as well as what films are on tap, offer a refreshing and welcomed glimpse at what’s to come for the future of Star Wars. Here’s hoping the animation side of things gets just as much love next or sooner! Head below for all the new details and more from the photoshoot! Emotional Attack With New Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Trailer

“Like you trained his father?” It’s emotional attack day, not May the 4th aka Star Wars Day, I guess! The second Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer has arrived and it’s a glorious one, featuring even more of Inquisitor Reva (Ingram Moses), Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton), a glimpse at Kumail Nanjiani’s character (who looks very Jedi-esque), a neat new droid (guess who the rumors say it’s a companion of…), lots of sad boy Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor), Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) suiting up, and…4-LOM?!? I’m honestly the most excited by the focus on Reva, as while most if not all of these characters we already know the fates of, she’s the rare exception and it’s very clear by this trailer there’s a lot more to her story, and focusing on new characters in the midst of established ones adds different stakes and a character to become a fan of. But most importantly, it’s just the thought of how many fans, young Black girls and boys, will be able to see themselves front and center in the latest big Star Wars show, and making her more complex than a bad-gal Inquisitor makes for even more compelling representation. If you’re curious when and if there will be toys associated with the show, both Obi-Wan’s lightsaber and a highly detailed Vader helmet where shown off ahead of the Obi-Wan Wednesday program (much like they’ve done for the other shows, weekly drops of new content). Head below for the impressive new poster and some stills from the trailer! Continue reading “Emotional Attack With New Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Trailer”
