Force Ghosts, Force Spirits, Blue Jedi Group…call it what you will, but they’ve had a complicated and varied history in Legends, as the ability for Force users to become one had editors and authors alike jumping from retcon to retcon as George Lucas decided to fill in the blanks slowly over time. Once those stories were placed aside for the new canon, Force spirit practitioners went from over 80 individuals to 5 (!), the process and ability to become a spirit stayed complicated but was given some clarity, while Force spirits have since been rarely touched on or discussed. In the Curious Case of Force Ghosts, I’ll be looking at how even though the whole idea of Force spirits got simpler, it has gotten equally more complicated (Yoda’s The Clone Wars arc helped on both ends), offering up curious questions including why Anakin Skywalker hasn’t made many visits (yet), and who’s still haunting around in the sequel trilogy. Strap in, unless you’re a ghost of course then float around at your leisure, as Detective Mynock is about take you on a ghoulish ride into the spirits of Star Wars where the answers might be more fleeting than any of us would like at the moment. As has been the custom over the past two celebrations, Dave Filoni and Pablo Hidalgo reveal inside looks at characters and unreleased behind-the-scenes details and new footage from the animated shows The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Unlike The Untold Clone Wars or Ahsoka’s Untold Tales, Animated Origins and Unexpected Fates wasn’t nearly as revealing, though there were teases for what’s to come on Rebels‘ 4th season (including Ahsoka returning!) and a great clip from TCW featuring Boba Fett and Cad Bane, but Filoni and Hidalgo are such a joy to listen to talking about Star Wars, the panel is always a blast no matter how much they give away. Ahsoka, by E.K. Johnston, is a YA novel that sheds a little light on the fan favorite eponymous character’s life post-The Clone Wars, pre-Star Wars Rebels. Johnston captures reader engagement with an excellent portrayal of Ahsoka Tano, dream character meetings, and a small focus, though that focus, the book’s pacing, and some questionable compositional choices do hinder the overall experience. Overall, Ahsoka fans or people looking for a quick and fun Star Wars book shouldn’t be deterred though, as there is still plenty to enjoy despite the flaws. Fans of Ahsoka Tano and those interested in the films beyond Rogue One have something to really look forward to at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016 (July 15-17), as two newly announced panels look to spill the proverbial Jawa beans on those subjects. First off, Ahsoka’s Untold Tales features Dave Filoni, Pablo Hildalgo, and Ashley Eckstein (the voice of Ahsoka Tano herself!), who will discuss the character’s, “…past, from her discovery by the Jedi Order as a young child, to her adventures in unproduced episodes of The Clone Wars, to the chapters of her life newly revealed in the Ahsoka novel and more!” As someone who went to Celebration Anahiem 2015’s Untold Clone Wars panel, where they revealed tons of new content, this is sure to be an absolute must-see for Ahsoka fans. Secondly, the Future Filmmaker Discussion includes Rian Johnson (director for Ep.VIII), Chris Miller and Phil Lord (directors of the untitled Han Solo film), Kathleen Kennedy, Kiri Hart, and Pablo Hildalgo as they, “…close out the weekend’s festivities on a high note!” Which, even if it’s just title reveals for both projects, would certainly be a high note for me. Just like the announcement of the book (from Nerdist), I won’t spoil anything from the Star Wars Rebels Season 2 finale regarding Ahsoka Tano’s fate (update: my review does), but the upcoming YA novel simply titled Ahsoka will reveal pivotal moments in her life during the great swath of time between her final The Clone Wars appearance and her re-emergence in Rebels. As excited as I am for the Leia-centric novel Bloodline and the Rogue One prequel novel, this just shot up to the top of my list simply because more Ahsoka is a damn good thing in my book. Dark Disciple, written by Christie Golden and adapted from 8 unproduced episodes of The Clone Wars TV show, follows two unlikely participants in a quest to assassinate the villainous Count Dooku: Quinlain Vos and Asajj Ventress. At times a thrilling story about love and the power it holds, what it means to be true to one’s self and the Force, and the darkness within us all, it falters however by feeling like it adheres too closely to the scripts, doesn’t elaborate enough, and stumbles to an uneven end. That being said, Dark Disciple is an engaging read not only for fans of the cancelled animated show, but for those who want an electrifying adventure that certainly reads like the up and downs of TV show episodes. The Clone Wars Legacy initiative has been bringing out cancelled content from the much beloved show slowly but surely. The latest release is The Bad Batch arc, which originally aired exclusively to Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2015 attendees, a 4 part series of unfinished TCW episodes revolving around a special batch of clones, Clone Force 99, self-nicknamed ‘The Bad Batch,’ on a mission to rescue once thought dead clone trooper Echo. Much like the Utapau arc released last year, these are the story reels you’ve been looking for i.e. another set of highly entertaining entries in TCW saga. Fans of The Clone Wars (one of them being me) were in for a treat when Pablo Hildalgo and Dave Filoni got to show off a lot of unseen concept art and clips, even if they weren’t really supposed to. They teased the Bad Batch arcs, Wookiee related plans, Cad Bane and Boba Fett on Tatooine, and some stuff from the 8 episodes the upcoming novel Dark Disciple is based off of, and some Ahsoka Tano shenanigans.
