Comic News: Galaxy’s Edge Tie-In Comic Miniseries Announced for April

Galaxys Edge Comic Announcement

April is shaping up to be quite the month for Star Wars content, from Star Wars Celebration Chicago likely to be full of big announcements and surprises, a tie-in comic to the upcoming Alphabet Squadron novel, the Master & Apprentice novel from Claudia Gray releases, and now a comic miniseries setting up Batuu’s Black Spire Outpost, the location fans will be able to visit in person at the upcoming Galaxy’s Edge theme-parks! More details below!

Galaxy's Edge 1 Concept Art Variant CoverThe five-issue miniseries, Galaxy’s Edge, will be written by Ethan Sack (writer of the Mace Windu short in Age of Republic – Special #1), with art by Will Sliney (Beckett and Solo adaptation). In an interesting, fun move, covers will be designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and Lucasfilm artists, which is an awesome idea as they were heavily involved with the creation of the park; In fact, the concept art variant cover seen with the announcement is from Karl Lindberg and Iain McCaig, featuring Dok-Ondar, who seems to be the main character of the miniseries! Dok-Ondar (mentioned off-hand in Solo, as was Black Spire Outpost) is an Ithorian collector of rare antiquities, which as writer Ethan Sack put it, “…every item has a story behind it. Some more dangerous to listen to than others,” and as we’ll be seeing what happens when the First Order first makes their presence known at Black Spire Outpost, it seems some of the stories about Dok-Ondar’s collection could hold the key to saving the outpost. The stories will include at least Han Solo and Chewbacca, as the announcement reveals, but I hope we’ll hear some stories including everyone’s favorite (definitely mine) rogue archaeologist, Doctor Aphra!

We’ve visited Batuu and its Black Spire Outpost already and its been referenced a few times already: In Thrawn – Alliances, a good part of the story takes place on Batuu; Yeager, the head mechanic of the Fireball and reluctant boss to Kazuda Xiono, Poe Dameron’s latest recruit to the Resistance and main character of Star Wars Resistance, is actually revealed to have lived with his family on Batuu, specifically at Black Spire Outpost; and two recent junior novels, Lando’s Luck and Pirate’s Price, which were part of the Flight of the Falcon series, mention or take place on Batuu. Meanwhile, Galaxy’s Edge, the parks themselves, will open for Disneyland in Spring 2019 (rumors pointing to June, if I remember correctly), while Disney World’s will be in Fall 2019, and we most recently learned about John Williams recording the score for the park and the two rides in the park. For some of us, yours truly included, this comic might be the closest we’ll get to Galaxy’s Edge for some time, so I’m happy they are fleshing it out in other mediums because they have to know not everyone will get a chance to go, no matter how badly they want to.

Expect more details about the first issue (or two) on January 22, Tuesday, as that’s when April’s comic solicitations go live, which we’ll have on the site for your convenience! UPDATE: They are live but don’t add anything new, unfortunately. And make sure to visit the old Mynock Manor in April for reviews of the Galaxy’s Edge comic miniseries!
