First SPECTRE Trailer Arrives

SPECTRE‘s first trailer is here and it’s mostly full of hints and teases, but it points to a slowly building sense of continuity not normally seen in the Bond franchise.

First off, Naomie Harris’ Moneypenny mentions personal effects of Bond’s were recovered from the destruction of his family home, Skyfall, seen in the eponymously titled film. Shortly after, Bond tracks down a character first seen in 2006’s Casino Royale, Mr. White, and last seen in 2008’s Quantum of Solace. It seems SPECTRE is interested in Mr. White, who was previously aligned with the mostly undefined organization Quantum. Seeing as they sat out of Skyfall, could Quantum have been the groundwork for SPECTRE or possibly even a subsidiary? Oberhauser, Christoph Waltz’s character, mentions how long it’s been, as he’s been waiting and building up to their meeting for a long time.

It seems strange to discuss continuity for the Bond franchise, but to keep itself relevant and separate itself from the pack, something needed to be done. At the same time, you could go see SPECTRE this fall without having seen any of the Craig Bond films and still likely appreciate it, but it’ll reward loyal viewers at the same time. With the same team behind 2012’s exceptional Skyfall behind this next one, I’m more than confident about where ever they plan on taking the franchise next.

The folks over at IGN.com have a write-up from some of their time at the film’s set in Mexico, where SPECTRE‘s opening sequence was shot. Michael G. Wilson, who has been producing Bond films since 1979’s Moonraker, is quoted as saying it’s “the biggest” opening scene they’ve done so far, which is saying something considering Skyfall was the previous record holder for that, so it’ll be interesting to see if it holds up to his big promise. The article includes spoilers from the scene, literally a play-by-play of it, so be careful if you head over to read it all.

SPECTRE hits (US) movie theaters on November 6, 2015.
