Han Solo Subject of Second Anthology Film, Directors and Writers Announced

Han Solo Anthology Team of Dreams

While not particularly surprising one of the Anthology Series (now rebranded to, “A Star Wars Story”) would focus on Han Solo, what’s truly awesome about this announcement is the team they’ve assembled to both direct and write the film.

Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, known most recently for the surprising smash-hit and thoroughly entertaining film The LEGO Movie, the 21 and 22 Jump Street films, and executive producers on the hilarious Last Man on Earth TV show, have been tapped to direct the upcoming Han Solo focused Anthology film. The pair are going to be busy over the next few years, as they’ll be writing for DC’s The Flash movie, an animated Spider-Man film, and now this project. Now we know why Han, Chewie, and Lando all made an appearance in The LEGO Movie: Miller and Lord were just practicing.

On the writing side, Star Wars fans will be happy to see Lawrence Kasdan behind the saddle, known for writing The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and the upcoming The Force Awakens, so he’s someone who’ll probably do a really good job writing Han Solo at any age. He’ll be joined by his son, Jon Kasdan.

Here’s what Kathleen Kennedy had to say about the team they’ve assembled for the project:

It’s not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I’m excited to say we’ve found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han’s story.

Not much was said about the details of the film, naturally, but it’s about how, “…young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.” Mayhaps we’ll see how Han met Chewie, won the Falcon from Lando, or maybe even uncover the story behind the surprising reveal in the Star Wars #6 comic? It’s possible we could see all or none of the above, so let the speculation begin. But the biggest question from this announcement that still remains: who will they get to play, basically, a young Harrison Ford? The answer to that is potentially more interesting than the possible story threads at this moment.

Expect to see the film May 25th, 2018. I’m hoping it’s called Star Wars: Anthology Series: Hey, It’s Me!
