Lots of new unions have been forming over the past couple of years in the galaxy. First, Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker and former assassin-turned-smuggler-turned-sorta-Jedi Knight Mara Jade have recently discovered that are a good team, both as Jedi and as lovers. As Luke learns more about the Jedi of the Old Republic, he learns that they eschewed attachments like marriage. But Luke, past the Empire’s prime and in love with another Jedi, decides that his Order doesn’t need to be beholden to this rule. After destroying the last of the late Grand Admiral Thrawn’s machinations, Luke and Mara have opened up diplomatic relationships with both the Empire of the Hand (Thrawn’s former subset of the Empire) and the Chiss themselves. Thankfully, both of these relationships were formed just in time.
On the edge of Chiss Space, the Empire of the Hand has discovered the remnants of the Republic’s doomed Outbound Flight. Originally, the ship was to travel to the ends of the galaxy and discover new territory for the Republic. For reasons unknown at the time, Chiss expeditionary forces (led by the late Thrawn) destroyed the ship. Unbeknownst to most of the galaxy, Senator Palpatine (Darth Sidious) knew that the ship might accidentally attract the attention of unfriendly aliens, so he had it destroyed. This led to the death of many Jedi and family members of Republic citizens, but kept the galaxy safe for a little while longer.
Now, Luke and Mara travel to the remnants of the ship as guests of the Chiss, who surrender the ship as some sort of reparations for the damage Thrawn committed. Dean Jinzler, an associate of Talon Karrde, also pretends to be a dignitary representing the New Republic, acting for reasons unknown to the Jedi. (His sister was one of the members of the doomed flight, and she was killed near the end of the flight.) Luke and Mara are also joined by members of the famed 501st Legion, who served as Vader’s Fist during the Great Jedi Purge and the Dark Times. These stormtroopers joined with Mara after she dealt fairly with some traitors and served as Hand of the Emperor. This specific branch of the 501st was loyal to the Empire of the Hand, but still work with the Jedi.
Thank goodness, because surprises abound on the ship! The Jedi and stormtroopers are attacked by Vagaari troopers who were stationed on the ship as well as Republic era battle droids. The stormtroopers and Jedi repel the attacks, which ends up saving the survivors of the crash, which happened almost 60 years ago. These survivors have created their own culture on the ship, one that has a deep mistrust of the Jedi. But the greatest surprise is not on the ship. The invaders that Darth Sidious worried about have started their approach to the known galaxy, and their deadly warships had already begun the trip to the edges of New Republic and Imperial space…

-This novel was written during the Prequels as a lead up to the sprawling New Jedi Order series. This book, along with Rogue Planet and Outbound Flight, were efforts by the publishing team to set up the Yuuzhan Vong threat earlier in the galaxy’s timeline.
