Politics is not always about government. This is a lesson that Palpatine knew at the end of the age of the Old Republic, and a lesson that the splintered and battered Imperial Remnant is learning now. Sometimes, corporate interests can shift the direction of a war, or the galaxy, and all it takes is a cunning mind to be able to turn those corporate aspirations into political gain….
The planet Thyferra is a hotbed of political interests, governmental interests, and corporate espionage. After Moff Ysanne Isard launched the deadly krytos virus on the non-human population of Coruscant, once it was liberated from Imperial control by New Republic agents, the New Republic learned how important it was that the medicinal treatment be available across the galaxy. Unfortunately, dark corporations also knew how important it was for the galaxy. On Thyferra, the bacta is controlled by two major corporations: the Xucphra and Zaltin. The Zaltin recently launched a political and corporate coup, taking control of the entire planet’s supply of bacta, completely cutting the Xucphra out of the picture.
Part of the downfall of the New Republic was the ever-growing power and control that corporations had over the galaxy. Toward the beginning of the Separatist crisis, the Trade Federation, Banking Clan, and Techno Union were all consolidating power, becoming power players in the Old Republic Senate. This control they had over the Senate helped them push their own interests forward, and Emperor Palpatine was able to play with their interests and further his own political ambitions. Unfortunately, it seems as if Ysard has learned from Palpatine, and leverages the Zaltin coup into a chance for her to gain power, and she is named a member of the Zaltin Corporation, which gives her control over the entire galaxy’s bacta supply.
Because this is a corporate matter, and not a political one, the New Republic is prevented from interfering. In light of this, Rogue Squadron succeeds from the New Republic and starts to work as freelancers to take back the bacta Ysard controls. Corran Horn, Mirax, and Booster Terrik, along with Twi’leks unhappy with the Zaltin coup, help the Rogues attack convoys carrying bacta in an effort to bring the medicine across the galaxy.
Ysard, ever vengeful and angry, leads Imperial strikes on the planets that receive aid from the bacta supplied by the Rogues. This leads her to eventually attack Thyferra itself, an inept political and corporate move, which costs her more allies. The strength of Palpatine’s manipulation of the corporations was they were led to believe that Palpatine was on their side until he had Vader destroy them. It’s not a great idea to trick a corporation into helping and breaking their help while they still live.
The Rogues then come up with a brilliant plan: expose their secret base and lure Isard to attack it directly. With the base seemingly exposed, Imperial forces move in on their base on Yag’Dhul, but are completely unprepared for the resistance they meet there. New Republic forces back up the Rogues, outnumbering the Imperial forces, forcing the Empire to leave behind the Star Destroyer Virulence. The Rogues then lead the fight to Thyferra, and stage a direct and victorious attack on the Lusankya. The New Republic emerges victorious, now in control of two new Star Destroyers.
It seems as if happy endings abound. These Star Destroyers are given to new pilots, and the Rogues are re-instated as New Republic agents. This leads Wedge in a new direction for his pilots, a new squadron called Wraith….
