February 2024’s Star Wars comics look a little lite, as Bounty Hunters is over and Doctor Aphra (Vol. 2) is suspiciously missing (DON’T DO THIS TO ME!), but what is on offer looks like it’ll pack quite the punch! The Mace Windu miniseries will finally kick off, Luke Skywalker finds himself in a Sith-filled situation, and The High Republic comics look to promise the return of faces once thought lost! January 2024’s Star Wars comics solicitations aren’t interested in your New Year’s resolutions or aspirations, as they have a distinct air of finality to them whether you want them to or not, seeming to promise the era of comics set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi might be winding down. But we should focus on the here and now, as Qui-Gon Jinn would say, and January’s comics have quite the bounty, from the giant, big finale to the Bounty Hunters series (see, things are ending!), a look at Marchion Ro’s victory lap after Starlight Beacon’s fall, another Visions comic to enjoy, and so much more! The High Republic is back, and Tales of Light and Life is leading the charge into Phase III by bringing together the past, present, and future of the initiative into one bound volume. And what a volume it is. If you’re a frequent reader here at the Manor, you know I absolutely loved Phase I of THR: I bought every variant of the novels (so, uh, four editions of Light of the Jedi and The Rising Storm; three editions of The Fallen Star, Out of the Shadows, and Midnight Horizon, etc.) and a lot of the comic variants, but Phase II fell rather flat to me. Thankfully, Tales of Light and Life comes in blasters blazing, creating new, exciting possibilities for the initiative and getting me excited again for the future. With delays disrupting the surety of when we’d see the ending to The High Republic Adventures – Phase II, Dark Horse rallied the troops and set the final three issues to release all on the same day. This was quickly dubbed “The High Republic Adventures Day,” and rightfully so, and now said day is finally upon us! As far as endings go, these last three issues take the series long dominos and bring them crashing down in emotional and exciting fashion, all while adding a few more in there for good measure, letting both its characters and its readers experience important messages they can take with them and use in their lives ahead.
