Canon Comic Retrospective: Doctor Aphra Series {Issues 1-40} (Volume 1)

Doctor Aphra Volume 1 Retrospective

– Full Spoiler Review –

I’ll never forget watching Doctor Aphra stuffed in an airlock, me chanting alongside her, “Please, not like this!” as Darth Vader promptly jettisons her out into space, her body floating into the cold depths of space. I was shocked, frustrated, and sad, barely able to finish the next few pages of Darth Vader #25 (Vol. 1), flipping past the credits in annoyance, only to see she somehow finagled together a plan to survive. Shortly after, her on-going comic series was announced, the first comic created character to lead her own series (among many other firsts), and my relief and excitement almost had me bursting out into happy tears compared to my sad tears moments before. 40 issues, and 3 Annuals later, Aphra continuously finagled a new way to survive out of the most unlikeliest of scenarios, hopping from one get rich quick scheme to another, but now her adventures (at least in Volume 1) have come to an end. Continue on to read Chris and mine’s review of the entire Doctor Aphra (Vol. 1) series! Continue reading “Canon Comic Retrospective: Doctor Aphra Series {Issues 1-40} (Volume 1)”

Canon Comic Review: Doctor Aphra “A Rogue’s End” Arc (Issues #37-40)

Doctor Aphra A Rogue's End Arc Review

– Spoiler Review –

When the title of the latest Doctor Aphra arc was revealed as “A Rogue’s End,” most people connected the dots and realized it meant the end of the series. I was not most people and instead was in denial, until the news officially came down the line. Even with a relaunch announced, I was curious and apprehensive what would transpire in the final arc of Volume 1 of Doctor Aphra, but with an excellent creative team involved, I never should’ve worried the finale would’ve been anything less than stellar. This review will also include mentions to Empire Ascendant’s “Epilogue” story, a wonderful little coda to this final arc and the series. Canon Comic Review: Empire Ascendant #1

Star Wars Empire Ascendant #1

– Spoiler Review –

As December 2019 comes to an end, it doesn’t just signal the end of the decade or the end of the Skywalker Saga, it also brings the first phase of Marvel’s various Star Wars comics to an end, which is where Empire Ascendant #1 comes in, a coda for what came before and a slight tease of what’s to come in 2020. Canon Comic Review: Doctor Aphra #40

Doctor Aphra #40

– Spoiler Review –

Three years since Doctor Aphra tricked Darth Vader and found a way to live on into her own comic series, the first volume of said series comes to a close today in Doctor Aphra #40, stuck in a situation similar to how this all started, except now she has more than herself to look out for. Had there not been a relaunch coming, or even the epilogue in Empire Ascendant, this would’ve been a fitting finale for the character and also would’ve left me begging for more. Doctor Aphra #38

– Spoiler Review –

In Doctor Aphra #38, Chelli Aphra has a reunion with her father in the most awkward of places: an Imperial torture room! From a bounty of familiar faces returning, Vader pitting the Aphra’s against one another, Vader messing with powers he doesn’t care to understand, and plenty of laughs, marching towards the end of this series has never been more enjoyable! Doctor Aphra Series Relaunches April 2020 with Non-Male Creative Suite (UPDATED)

Doctor Aphra 2020 Relaunch Announcement Cover

Ever since the tease of more Doctor Aphra at NYCC, I’ve been waiting patiently (see: not at all), and so have many other fans of the character, to learn when and where we’ll see our favorite disaster again after December’s Empire Ascendant. The peaceful (see: agonizing) wait is mostly over: Doctor Aphra relaunches in April 2020! While we don’t have any real details on what everyone’s favorite morally dubious rogue archeologist will be up to, or if Tolvan and Vulaada will still be with her, the creative team announced (via BleedingCool) for the relaunch is extremely exciting: Alyssa Wong, an Asian person, will be writing, while Marika Cresta joins for interior art, and covers (which already look phenomenal) will be done by Valentina Ramener; an all-non-male trifecta for Aphra is one the greatest developments in this character’s handling so at this point I don’t care what they do with Aphra, I’m ready for whatever! Considering we’re to learn Aphra’s (plus Tolvan’s and Vulaada’s) fate in December, and the solicitations for April 2020 comics wouldn’t come until January, I wouldn’t be surprised if they withhold further details until after Empire Ascendant, but I could definitely (see: hopefully) be wrong. We’ll bring you more updates on everything Doctor Aphra as we get them! Update 3/31/2020: With the growing Covid-19 pandemic, the comics’ industry has been figuring out how to deal with the situation. As of now, the first issue of the Aphra relaunch won’t come out on April 1 as scheduled, though Marvel is still working on future plans. We’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more! UPDATE 5/4/20: The issue will release to stores (that are open) May 27, but it came out early on digital for Star Wars Day and here’s our review! Canon Comic Review: Doctor Aphra #37

Doctor Aphra #37

– Spoiler Review –

As always, I’m beyond ecstatic for a new Doctor Aphra issue, especially #37 as it’s the start of a new arc, “A Rogue’s End,” but this one comes with a sense of melancholy for me and many other Aphra fans, as it also happens to be the final arc of the series; at least it’s a solid, entertaining start with tons of promise!
