Writer Jason Aaron, who has been the shepherd of the Star Wars mainline series since day one, will be stepping down and replaced by none other than Kieron Gillen (Darth Vader, Doctor Aphra) himself, starting issue #38 later this year (first uncovered by the greatest sleuth of the internet, Florian of Jedi-Bibliothek). And over the weekend at SDCC 2017, not only was the fan-voted Doctor Aphra action-figure shown off, an adaptation of Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn novel was announced. Canon Comic Review: Star Wars #33

While the Star Wars mainline series was saved, momentarily, by The Screaming Citadel crossover with the Doctor Aphra series, it’s been awhile since I’ve really enjoyed an issue and knowing the next arc would start with Luke and Leia getting some alone time on an island, my apprehension was simply not helped. Thankfully, Star Wars #33 is a return to form for the series, not only giving us fantastic insight into Leia, but also some enjoyable twin team moments and the most exciting set up yet for what’s to come next (Hint: the series first (and nearly only) new character and a certain charming smuggler)! The original Darth Vader series, written by Kieron Gillen, with art by Salvador Larroca and Edgar Delgado, was part of the initial launch of Marvel’s return to Star Wars comics in 2015. After it ended over a year and a half later, October 2016, its epic story of betrayal, Sith machinations, and surprisingly well-laden doses of dark humor ensured it would live on in the hearts of fans new and old for years to come. Doctor Aphra and Star Wars Comics Star in Marvel’s The Screaming Citadel Crossover
When I first saw the announcement, I thought it was a joke, as The Screaming Citadel sounds like something out of a campy horror B-movie. Thankfully it wasn’t though, as it sounds like Marvel’s next crossover (the first being Vader Down) looks to embrace the title’s tone and give us a gothic-horror story set in the Star Wars universe. Even better, it’s a crossover of the mainline Star Wars series with my absolute favorite comic character to date, Doctor Aphra!
