Star Wars #17 continues to make the “Rebel Jail” arc all about the women in some of most exciting ways possible, giving Leia, Sana, and Aphra the center stage spotlight they so deserve. Their prominence begs the question about this issue’s only downside: why are we wasting any time or space with Luke and Han on their nerf-herding adventure right now? Star Wars #16 starts the “Rebel Jail” arc, which brings the series back into ‘present time’, picking up where the crossover event Vader Down left off: Doctor Aphra in the clutches of our Rebel heroes. The Star Wars on-going, fresh off the completion of Marvel’s first crossover event Vader Down, takes a break from the main narrative and returns to a story “From the Journals of Old Ben Kenobi,” last visited in issue #7. Star Wars #15’s entry from Kenobi’s journal is an extension from the story in #7, but it also explains in thorough and interesting detail just why Uncle Owen has such a big chip on his shoulder when it comes to their benevolent protector Obi-Wan. Everything, from the story to the art, combine to make a great continuation of Ben’s journals, while a surprise character sets up for an exciting return, whenever the next Journal entry comes. The action ramps up in Star Wars #14, Part 5 of the Vader Down crossover event, as Karbin reveals his involvement in forcing Darth Vader to Vrogas Vas and challenges the Dark Lord to become the Emperor’s right hand man. Things only get worse for everyone however and SW #14 ends with a whole bunch of cliffhangers just waiting to be resolved in the finale to Vader Down.
