After the stunning work for the Black History Month and Women’s History Month variant covers, there’s been increased anticipation for 2023’s Pride Month variants and after today’s reveal of the first handful (I’ll update this article as the rest roll in), they might just be the best batch of Pride Month variants yet! Featuring work done by LGBTQIA+ artists, characters like Sana Starros, Domina Tagge, Kantam Sy, and even Cinta and Vel from Andor will grace the covers, among others. Nothings ever truly gone…or dead, as the return of the annual spookfest for Star Wars comics likes to remind us! From the ashes of IDW’s Vader’s Castle series rises Dark Horse’s Tales from the Rancor Pit, this year’s spooktacular collection of scary all-ages tales from writer Cavan Scott and a variety of artists. It’s been 6 months since the announcement Dark Horse would return to publish Star Wars comics and now we have the first details on their non-The High Republic content! Dark Horse is focusing on all-ages comics, like IDW did from 2017-2021, with two series: 1) Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories, essentially their take on IDW’s Star Wars Adventures line, as it’s an anthology series set in all different eras on the timeline. 2) Tales from the Rancor Pit, a new take on the horror anthology goodness IDW cooked up with their Vader’s Castle series. These two join the already announced The High Republic – Quest of the Jedi, though while that’s not out until October or later, these should be out in the summer! You wouldn’t quite know it, but with Star Wars Adventures #14 (Vol. 2), IDW closes out their mainline series and is their penultimate contribution before Dark Horse takes over the license later in the year. The main story focused on Rey wraps up nicely while Justina Ireland’s The High Republic back-up tale is a stellar showing for writer and artist both.
