(Intro by Head Butler Ryan: This is Trinity’s first post as a contributor here at the Manor! I met her and her husband at Celebration Orlando this year as we waited in line for the Rebels S4 panel and I was fortunate enough to make two new friends, plus interest from her in writing for the site. So give her a giant “Welcome to Fandom” hug over on Twitter @TrubelleNova, after you finish reading her article of course!)
What is Rey to you? When I think about our new Star Wars hero, Rey, I want to know her backstory. I want the question answered: is she a Jakku original or is she the long-lost daughter of Luke Skywalker? Is she the kidnapped baby of Leia and Han Solo or somehow through a long thread connected to Obi-Wan? But Rey is more than each of her story parts that we are so curious about. Let’s start at the beginning.
From the first time we see Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, she is independent. She leads a precarious profession that endangers her life daily and that danger coupled with the harsh elements of an outlaw desert world made her a survivor. The preferred adjective we give to those of her breed is “strong” and she is indeed that. But when fans discuss Rey’s journey, sometimes things go wrong. Her “strength” becomes a liability. Rogue One #3 adds a cut scene for Baze and Chirrut and some bittersweet continuity for Saw’s final moments, while ending just as the Rebellion makes things rather messy on Eadu. Continue reading “Canon Comic Review: Rogue One #3” →

Rebel Rising by Beth Revis is an excellently told tale about Jyn Erso’s life, set between the opening flashback of Rogue One and her being broke out of prison on Wobani by the Rebellion, while its Young Adult moniker should be ignored if that typically scares you away from a book because RR really highlights the harsher realities of the journey Jyn goes on. Vanity Fair’s The Last Jedi article features some absolutely fantastic photos from Annie Leibovitz and also happens to reveal the names of Laura Dern and Benecio Del Toro’s new characters, spends time remembering Carrie Fisher, gives details on the film itself, and introduces the new casino city called Canto Bight. Really, it’s all about the photos and this year’s are stunning. Continue reading “Vanity Fair Unmasks The Last Jedi Secrets” →

In Guardians of the Whills, Greg Rucka expertly captures the bond between leads Baze Malbus and Chirrut Îmwe while bringing the struggles of Jedha to light even more profoundly than Rogue One does, making the young reader novel one to be enjoyed by all ages and especially by fans of the two characters. While there are minor variations from the film in Rogue One #2, this one skews a little closer to the source material but still manages to add some delightful extra moments, continuing the successful and enjoyable adaptation of the film. Continue reading “Canon Comic Review: Rogue One #2” →
The Lucasfilm’s Publishing Writer’s Roundtable on Friday was a pleasant panel where we got to spend some time with various authors across various mediums and age-ranges of material discussing their process and writing for Star Wars. It all ended with a bang, as the Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi initiative was announced (a similar program was in place for The Force Awakens), where hints for the new film will be hidden in the Phasma novel by Deliah S. Dawson, the Captain Phasma comic miniseries by Kelly Thompson, Leia: The Princess of Alderaan YA novel by Claudia Gray (!!), and Ken Liu’s (!!!) The Legends of Luke Skywalker, and much more! Details within and some additional insights from the Del Rey panel Saturday as well.
“I only know one truth. It’s time for the Jedi to end.” Luke finally speaks in Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s first trailer and they are words no-one expected him to say (and they sent chills up my spine) and has gotten the theory wagon running wild on what will take place in the upcoming installment of the Skywalker Saga. Likewise, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Kathleen Kennedy, Rian Johnson, Kelly Marie Tran, and of course Mark Hamill all divulged a few new hints about the film, which ranged from exciting to haunting, much like the trailer. So go ahead, enjoy the trailer a few more hundred times and then read ahead for my impressions of the panel at Star Wars Celebration Orlando 2017 (which I finally wrote after I was done rewatching the trailer and stopped staring at the teaser poster we received for being at the show…both hard to stop doing).
