While I can’t guarantee much these days, I can guarantee October means another birthday for me! It’s also where the spooky and comfortable fall season really kicks into high gear, so it’s usually a win-win all around. And thankfully, Star Wars comics usually pull through for me as well and 2025 looks to be no different. We’ve got Han, Luke, and Valance in clone trooper armor (what?!), Kelleran Beq makes his first big comics splash, we learn the identity of whomever was able to help out-slice Doctor Aphra, Luke and Leia face off against the Nightlander, and more! Han Solo and Luke Skywalker in stormtrooper armor goes back to A New Hope and hard to find action figures, but Han and Luke AND Beilert Valance in CLONE TROOPER ARMOR?! I’ll take 7 of the action figures please and yes, I get that means they’ll probably not be worth much in the future but it’s a wild and fantastic visual to see, especially in Phil Noto’s wonderful style! Another solicitation, another day it feels like we’re closer than ever to seeing my theory that Atha Prime, the Kenner Toys’ rejected post-Return of the Jedi toyline villain who has now become canon in the Jedi Knights comic, is set to be revealed as the big threat behind all that vexes our heroes in this era. Given all the Clone Wars-era threats teased and already coming their way, as issue #3 (out earlier in July) revealed B-1 battle droids were joining the fight at the New Republic, plus the hints there’s some mysterious benefactor propping up and messing with these various groups allying against the New Republic, Prime would be a great candidate to be behind it all. Or I’m just stuck with confirmation bias problems. Otherwise, I’ve been keeping up on the series and the Nagai society has been quite interesting and I’m curious to see where Segura is all going with it. HOT ON THE TRAIL OF THE FALCON!
- HAN SOLO and CHEWBACCA continue their search for the Falcon and face RAPTOR DROIDS along the way!
- DUCAIN is in for a beating when Han and Chewie find him!
- And how are the IRVING BOYS wrapped up in this intergalactic chase?!
While I’m curious most about how much this series will dive into the state of Han’s life during this time period and less about the hunt itself, it seems like Rodney Barnes is going to pack this with some fun action at the very least. The more I think on this series, the more I’m beginning to wonder, will it end with the iconic moment from The Force Awakens, Han and Chewie running onto the Falcon, Han saying, “Chewie, we’re home.”???? Totally fine if it’s not the case, but it would be a fun way to end it, maybe even showing the moment from their POV, inverting the scene a bit as it was in the movie, and now I won’t be able to get this vision out of my head.

KYLO REN VS. TAVA REN!
- TAVA REN begins her attempt to overthrow KYLO REN as leader!
- Will KYLO REN be able to withstand the onslaught from this enigmatic new foe??
I appreciate that Tava Ren might be a big fight for Kylo Ren, because if she wants control over the Knights of Ren, she better be a formidable fight for the young Supreme Leader, who has shown some impressive control of the Force in both live-action and the comics so far. Given this solicit states Tava is beginning her attempt, I sort of hope we get two to three more issues of their fight for supremacy, but we’ll see how long Soule drags this out for Kylo.

The Jedi Knights series is home to plenty of unique and fun issues and I’m absolutely intrigued by a full first-person point of view issue!! Especially if it’s through a youngling’s eyes, the Jedi could look both extra heroic or even somewhat frightening with their abilities, and if there’s any creative team I trust at this point to make it a memorable issue, it’s Guggenheim and Musabekov. Otherwise, more Kelleran Beq?! The answer is always, “Yes, please!”
Doctor Aphra: Chaos Agent #5 (on sale 10/29)

WHO SLICED THE SLICER?

We’re only two issues in and new Aphra writer Cherish Chen really feels like she’s just getting started, and while most of the opening issues include a famous face alongside Aphra, it looks like issue #5 will be where that all changes, as we finally get into the big reveal of who knew how to lock Aphra’s tattoos. Meteora Gray, the Director of the New Republic’s DAGGER agency was the one who physically did it, but this is suggesting there’s someone above Gray who knew how to do it and passed it along to her to use against Aphra. This mystery was first teased in the initial announcement of the series, so I’m glad we’ll get to see who can outsmart Aphra sooner rather than later! Is it the mysterious DAGGER benefactor in the higher echelons of the New Republic government, teased in issue #1? And are they whomever is the main cover with Aphra, this striking blonde individual? Is this individual on the cover Magna Tolvan, who also has electro-tattoos and knows a thing or two about them, though it would mean Ejikure’s cover gave her a little glow-up/hide her throat cybernetics? Or is this great slicer Aphra’s mom, which was a long-running and very wrong theory I had about the Empire’s propaganda minister Pitina Mar-Mas Voor in the first Aphra series? Is it Domina Tagge? Or is it the return of Vulaada, Aphra’s ward for a small period of time? Or maybe Vukorah from the Bounty Hunters run? Or some other Legends name not yet in canon people will be hyped for? I really need to know, I’m ready to be shocked!!
Elsewhere, I found it surprising after Kieran McKeown takes over from Gabriel Guzman on issue #4, Steven Cummings takes over on issue #5. Cummings’ work on the big Qi’ra crossover series lead to some gorgeous visuals and netted him a spot in my 2022 Top 3 Art Teams, so I’m excited about another new face, but I hope they manage to keep someone for a little while again or switch between at least one of these three.
And the variant cover by Rod Reis, using her electro-tattoos like they are jail bars (she’s been drawn behind literal bars before!), is brilliant and I’m gonna need it too!!

Saladin Ahmed has had an interesting set of previous Star Wars writings, his first story was in 2017’s Canto Bight, which was part of the Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and later he returned for Malakili’s, aka rancor-keeper, tale in From a Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi, my favorite of his two so far. Taking over for an issue of Boba Fett’s Black, White & Red? I’ll be intrigued to see what he has up his sleeves, while Rosanas’ art is always something I always look forward to, which might make this a memorable issue! We just got our first look at issue #1, which is out a week after this publishing and, well…Kit Fisto’s smile is in abundance so far! This could be a fun little adventures overall and I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the first issue over at Bluesky, with a full review to follow once the series is over.

I’m really getting hyped for the return of Scott’s horror anthology fun, especially with such a neat new premise and idea, this Nightlander character created by Iain McCaig. Leia and Luke, shortly after he’s learned about being Vader’s son, is a ripe time that did get a lot of exploration already in Charles Soule’s Star Wars (2020), but this attacking it from a different angle and is going to be played more for chills than anything else. Sign me up! And then after this, the final issue stars Rey and Finn!
