Our first glimpse at the new animated series, Star Wars Resistance, has arrived! Already I’m liking the hot-shot pilot, high-octane, action-adventure vibe, and while the animation style isn’t something I’m used to, I don’t mind it one bit. Make sure to check out the trailer above and head below for more details, like the synopsis for the first episode and which character each cast member is playing. Resistance premieres October 7, on the Disney channel, at 9pm CST.
Announced back in April, Star Wars Resistance takes place prior to the events of The Force Awakens, following Kazuda Xiono as he’s tasked with spying on the First Order as an undercover operative on the Colossus, a refueling station on an outer rim planet. There will be plenty of new characters on the show, but familiar faces like Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), General Leia (Rachel Butera), and even BB-8 will appear throughout.
The hour-long premiere is titled, “The Recruit,” and here’s the synopsis:
“Poe and BB-8 assign Kaz to the Colossus, where he meets a cast of colorful new aliens, droids and creatures. While undercover to spy on the growing threat of the First Order, Kaz works as a mechanic and lives with Poe’s old friend Yeager — a veteran pilot who operates a starship repair shop run by his crew: Tam, Neeku and a battered old astromech called Bucket.”
Here’s the full cast and their corresponding character list per the press release:
Christopher Sean (“Days of Our Lives”) as Kazuda Xiono; Suzie McGrath (“East Enders”) as Tam Ryvora; Scott Lawrence (“Legion”) as Jarek Yeager; Myrna Velasco (“Elena of Avalor”) as Torra Doza; Josh Brener (“Silicon Valley”) as Neeku Vozo; Donald Faison (“Scrubs”) as Hype Fazon; Jim Rash (“Community”) and Bobby Moynihan (“DuckTales”) as Flix and Orka, respectively; Oscar Isaac (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) as Poe Dameron, Gwendoline Christie (“Game of Thrones”) as Captain Phasma and Rachel Butera (“Tammy’s Tiny Tea Time”) as General Leia Organa.
In general I’m always excited for new Star Wars content, and there’s nothing in the trailer, for me at least, to make me not excited right now. I won’t truly know how to feel about Resistance until the show premieres, but I’m already digging the Top Gun/Rogue Squadron vibe and the animation so far. I am a little curious how long the show will be set on the Colossus (and this yet to be named planet), as the sequel trilogy-era could really use material to flesh out background details, and Resistance seems tailor-made to explore the galaxy a bit more, as I can imagine subsequent seasons of the show could take place during The Force Awakens/The Last Jedi timeframe, maybe even piercing whatever time jump separates Ep. IX from TLJ (much like the Poe Dameron comic has been in its final, heart-wrenching arc). Speaking of that comic series, if there’s one thing I’d personally love to see: Kaz and some of his allies show up in the Poe Dameron comic’s final issue to save Black Squadron and we spend a season (or two) building up to that moment on the show; great way to build excitement for the show and give an excellent series some added exposure. The characters of Resistance will be in comics for sure sometime late next year, as part of the Age of Resistance series (itself the third part of the “Age of…” maxi-series), announced back at SDCC 2018. UPDATE: One fan scrapped through the official site’s Resistance page and found the metadata mentions the show takes place 6 months prior to TFA, meaning subsequent seasons are WAY more likely to move past The Last Jedi.
October 7, 9pm CST, “The Recruit” will go live on the Disney Channel, Disney Now, and Disney VOD, though the episode will re-air on Disney XD (Star Wars Rebels’ home), which is where the series will continue to air for the rest of the season.
