Canon Comic Review: Thrawn (#1-6) Miniseries

It’s par for the course the films get comic adaptations, but it was downright surprising when this adaptation of the first Thrawn novel from Timothy Zahn was announced. Jody Houser was given the unenviable task of squeezing a novel into six comic issues, and while the shortcomings are what you’d imagine, her barebones version of the plot still hits the right beats, though it’s hard to argue for picking this adaptation up unless you’re a true Grand Admiral Thrawn completionist/fan. It’s been quiet on the new novel and comic fronts for quite some time, especially once it was revealed 3 comics would be ending in September and the only known novels were Thrawn: Alliances and the Solo adaptation. Star Wars Adventures Forces of Destiny v3 — Elsa Charretier Variant Covers

When it was first announced the younger marketed Star Wars Adventures comics from IDW would have a Forces of Destiny tie-in miniseries, a show itself great for the same audience the comic reached, it felt like a match made in Cloud City. Now that all five issues of the female-centric miniseries have released, all written by female creatives, I can honestly say it belongs among the clouds, despite a few minor missteps that won’t really matter to core readers of the event series. Comic News: Kieron Gillen Takes Over Star Wars Series, Dr. Aphra Figure First Look, Thrawn Comic Adaptation Announced

Writer Jason Aaron, who has been the shepherd of the Star Wars mainline series since day one, will be stepping down and replaced by none other than Kieron Gillen (Darth Vader, Doctor Aphra) himself, starting issue #38 later this year (first uncovered by the greatest sleuth of the internet, Florian of Jedi-Bibliothek). And over the weekend at SDCC 2017, not only was the fan-voted Doctor Aphra action-figure shown off, an adaptation of Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn novel was announced.
