With Phase II nearing its end, much of Celebration Europe 2023’s High Republic panel focused on teasing what was ahead for Phase III: Trials of the Jedi, as we got a ton of title reveals and a general timeline for its length, with Phase III ending in 2025! Pair all the reveals with Alyssa Wong (Doctor Aphra) joining the team and the big news a fan favorite character appears in The Acolyte (!!!), it means The High Republic keeps on winning. Summer is in the air, flowers are in full bloom, and you are probably just like me, trying to avoid allergies and get to your local comic shop to pick up the latest Star Wars comics! June 2023’s Star Wars comic solicitations foretell quite the month, from Anakin and Yoda going toe-to-toe with Megadroids (a name as Star Wars as it gets), the excellent Sana Starros miniseries takes its final bow, Aphra’s hanging out with Luke, Vader’s hanging out with….Aphra, and Luke is hanging out with…..a different doctor? The first issue for Justina Ireland and Pere Pérez’s Sana Starros miniseries was a refreshing and mesmerizing beginning, so my hopes were high it could keep up the quality going forward. I can comfortably confirm Sana Starros #2 is much of the same, and even exceeds the opening, as it combines fun action, great character work, and some exciting reveals for fans of everything from Solo to The High Republic! The High Republic’s Phase II: Quest for the Jedi is barreling towards it end in May, leavings fans to wait for Phase III to start in November, though thankfully there’ll be content to tide everyone over, like the much-anticipated YA Anthology featuring all the initiative’s authors! This year’s Star Wars Month already has a bounty of delights on screen, like Star Wars: Visions Volume 2 and Young Jedi Adventures, and it seems like the comics will bring the party as well. Since 2015, Sana Starros has been intermixing across various comics, often in a supporting role or co-lead role, be it coming after Han Solo for a botched job or either trying to kill or save her ex, Doctor Aphra, and now she’s taking the spotlight in this eponymous miniseries, a long overdue right for such a memorable and intriguing character. Written by Justina Ireland, with art by Pere Pérez, Sana Starros #1 explodes with a infectious energy thanks to a snappy, intriguing script and vibrant art that promises a beautiful yet wild ride across the miniseries’ 5 issues. I wish this was an April Fool’s joke, but April 2023’s Star Wars comics bring another Darth Vader focused comic, but fear not, there’s plenty of other comics goodness to enjoy! As we look ahead to March 2023 Star Wars comics with the latest solicitations, we look to have an embarrassment of riches. And the month is already packed, from Jedi: Survivor coming out, it’s novel tie-in, The Bad Batch‘s second season on-going, and The Mandalorian‘s third season begins, to name a few things…and now all these comics?!?! There’s the penultimate issue in Qi’ra’s final fight against the Sith, the end of Spark Eternal Saga in the Doctor Aphra series, the start of the Return of the Jedi anniversary one-shots, Han Solo & Chewbacca‘s ending teasing the next big event (which I might not be looking forward to), and so much more!
