A weekly release schedule certainly would’ve still worked, but having to wait another week for the final episode after the cliffhanger in “Chapter 9” would’ve been excruciating. Thankfully, the double-batch release of Maul: Shadow Lord saved us the wait and gave us a memorable, intense, and emotional finale to the show’s first season, even if it exposed some of its issues. After an exciting and promising start, Maul: Shadow Lord returns for its third and fourth episodes, “Chapter 3 – Whispers in the Unknown” & “Chapter 4 – Pride & Vengeance”. Of the two, “Chapter 3” was my favorite and is already easily my favorite of the season, as Maul hones in on Devon and pieces shift into place for Janix’s answer to Maul’s incursion, though “Chapter 4” is no slouch, ending on an ominous arrival that’ll change the show going forward, though it does help raise some questions about the show’s timely nature (and lack thereof). Maul – Shadow Lord Season One Premiere Review: “Chapter 1 – The Dark Revenge” & “Chapter 2 – Sinister Schemes”

To paraphrase an earworm of a 90’s tune, he gets knocked down again but you can never quite keep him down. Maul is back and ready to enact his revenge on the Shadow Collective who betrayed him and moved on without him, setting up for the seedy and intriguing new show, Maul: Shadow Lord. The two-episode premiere, “Chapter 1 – The Dark Revenge” & “Chapter 2 – Sinister Schemes”, sets a luscious, neo-noir stage for Maul’s return to the underworld, pulling in a cast of characters that are just taking form as the second episode ends, all through some of the most gorgeous animation, moody soundtrack, and layered vocal performances in Star Wars animation to date!
