A Star Wars Anthology Story: Retrospective on Jason Aaron’s Star Wars Comic Run (#1-37)

Since Marvel’s new beginnings with the Star Wars license, the Star Wars mainline series has been the backbone of the comics, providing adventurous tales about the Big Three: Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo. At the helm of the series since the start has been writer Jason Aaron, who has taken us on anthology-lite arcs of story between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, filling in what’s becoming quite the crowded era. His stories contained everything from big surprises were you least expected them to character moments big and small. And after 37 issues, stretching from January 2015 to October 2017, Jason Aaron’s run has come to an end. Having read the series since its inception, it’s time now to look back at Aaron’s legacy as this retrospective discusses what I feel has been the good, the bad, and the in-between of his nearly three year run. Star Wars #37

– Spoiler Review –

This is it folks, the end of an era: Jason Aaron’s Farewell Tour of the Star Wars comic series comes to a close in issue #37, the last part of the “Out Among the Stars” arc. While it’s not as high a note as the previous few issues, it feels like a mostly fitting end to Aaron’s work, made even more so by the bonus one-shot included. In the coming weeks I’ll have a retrospective of his 37-issue run, so for now this review is simply of the final issue. Continue reading “Canon Comic Review: Star Wars #37”

Star Wars #36

– Spoiler Review –

Despite the need for rescuing C-3PO being practically forgotten, R2-D2’s escapades to do just that gives Jason Aaron’s Farewell Tour (the penultimate issue by the way) another hit on its hands with Star Wars #36. Continue reading “Canon Comic Review: Star Wars #36”

Star Wars #35

– Spoiler Review –

Writer Jason Aaron’s farewell arc continues, and if Star Wars #35 is anything to go by, a short little tale of that one time Han smuggled a Hutt, Aaron will certainly be leaving this series on a high note. Continue reading “Canon Comic Review: Star Wars #35”

Star Wars #34

Comic News: Kieron Gillen Takes Over Star Wars Series, Dr. Aphra Figure First Look, Thrawn Comic Adaptation Announced

Writer Jason Aaron, who has been the shepherd of the Star Wars mainline series since day one, will be stepping down and replaced by none other than Kieron Gillen (Darth VaderDoctor Aphra) himself, starting issue #38 later this year (first uncovered by the greatest sleuth of the internet, Florian of Jedi-Bibliothek). And over the weekend at SDCC 2017, not only was the fan-voted Doctor Aphra action-figure shown off, an adaptation of Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn novel was announced. Details are below on Gillen’s start of Star Wars, pictures of the Aphra figure, and some thoughts on what I believe to be a shrug-worthy idea in adapting Thrawn. Star Wars #33

– Spoiler Review –

While the Star Wars mainline series was saved, momentarily, by The Screaming Citadel crossover with the Doctor Aphra series, it’s been awhile since I’ve really enjoyed an issue and knowing the next arc would start with Luke and Leia getting some alone time on an island, my apprehension was simply not helped. Thankfully, Star Wars #33 is a return to form for the series, not only giving us fantastic insight into Leia, but also some enjoyable twin team moments and the most exciting set up yet for what’s to come next (Hint: the series first (and nearly only) new character and a certain charming smuggler)! Star Wars #32 - The Screaming Citadel Part 4

– Spoiler Review –

Star Wars #32 is Part 4 of The Screaming Citadel crossover and it is the zaniest and most enjoyable issue yet! Triple-Zero falls in love (?!?), the symbiotes bring plenty of screams, and Doctor Aphra makes a surprising (for her, at least) decision. Star Wars #31 - The Screaming Citadel Part 2

– Spoiler Review –

The Screaming Citadel crossover continues in Part 2 – Star Wars #31! Despite a new creative team for this portion of the crossover, none of the charm from Part 1 is lost and things spiral, ever entertainingly so, even more out of control for Doctor Aphra and Luke.
