Star Wars Resistance Season 2 Review: “The Mutiny”

Star Wars Resistance The Mutiny

– Spoiler Review –

Kragan and his band of pirates are tired of being bossed around by Captain Doza and decide to take the Colossus for themselves! Join me as I review the latest episode of Star Wars Resistance, “The Mutiny!”

If there are two things that I have been wanting out of this show, it has been more Neeku and to finally see the pirate revolt that has been brewing since the pirates joined the Colossus at the end of the first season. Thankfully, this episode delivers both, to varying degrees of success.

Star Wars Resistance The MutinyThe episode opens with Kragan and his pirates visiting notorious smuggler and criminal Sidon Ithano. At some point, Ithano, also known as the Crimson Corsair, came across both a clone trooper (in the excellent Tales short story “The Crimson Corsair and the Lost Treasure of Count Dooku”) and a pile of Super Battle Droids. Kragan barters with Ithano (threatening the Corsair, despite Ithano’s galactic infamy) to purchase the Battle Droids as part of his plan to finally take over the fueling station. Kragan’s plan seems pretty good: the Super Battle Droids (stylized more similarly to the animation of The Clone Wars than their designs in the films) were a worthy adversary for even Jedi, so they should do fine in fighting a mostly civilian population.

Unfortunately for the pirates, and maybe boringly for the audience, Captain Doza is nursing a very strong suspicion about the pirates at the exact same time. Synara tries to fight for the pirates, telling Doza that the pirates are really bored and should be given some leeway to leave, otherwise they might revolt. Doza ignores her warning, reminding her how dangerous they are to the crew based on their past experiences with the pirates. Because Doza already suspects the pirates, the conflict of the episode is taken away really early, because we see Doza plan ahead for the mutiny a few hours before it takes place. I wonder if the pay-off to the mutiny might have been a little higher if Doza hadn’t planned ahead in the same episode as it took place? Because explicit talk of mutiny and the mutiny itself take place in the same episode, the build up and climax both feel rushed and undercooked.

So how does Doza prepare? He sends Neeku to do some spy work! Neeku, who has previously thought about a life of piracy, is happy to do whatever Doza needs to protect his family on the station. So, Neeku boldly marches to the pirates and is hired as a mechanic to work on whatever the pirates need. The needed repairs turn out to be the Super Battle Droids, which Neeku repairs, along with a spindly B1 Battle Droid. Despite his innocence, or naivety, Neeku knows to plan ahead for any contingency that the pirates might spring on him. The pirates tell Neeku that they bought the droids as a gift for the station, a sort of security force as the First Order moves in on them. Neeku sees right through this, and I mean, I’m glad he did, because no one brings Super Battle Droids for good reasons.Star Wars Resistance The Mutiny

The mutiny is short lived. I didn’t time it, but it takes up such a small portion of the episode that it doesn’t register much with the audience, or even some characters. We see two characters watch the Super Battle Droids gun down the guard droids, but they shrug and return to their drinks. Somehow, the mutiny is treated as business as usual. I can’t tell if this was done for comedic effect or to make a point about the mutiny, but it really didn’t make me feel too worried when Doza and Yeager were surrounded by pirates in Doza’s office later. If the characters on the show whose lives are endangered don’t care, it’s hard for me to!

That being said, I was happier with this episode than I have been with previous ones. Giving Neeku a huge role was a lot of fun, and it let the show poke some fun at Kaz. Granted, these jokes might have been a little *too* meta for me, as they poked fun at how over the top inept Kaz is, but I still laughed. It was nice to see the mutiny finally transpire, but the ending was rushed and I was bummed that the pirates were just…let off the ship with the hopes that they wouldn’t bug the Colossus again. With only a few episodes left to go, it was a good move to finish this story up. Hopefully, the show can now return its focus to Tam and the First Order, and wrap up the storyline for the Colossus, even though I’m still not entirely sure what the endgame is for the show.

+Neeku gets a lot to do!

+The plot gets more focused as it heads toward the finale.

The pirate mutiny ends as quickly as it started.
