Video Game Review: Star Wars Outlaws

– Spoiler Review –

From the moment Ubisoft and developer Massive Entertainment announced Star Wars Outlaws, I was smitten, especially given the many starts and stops over the past near decade of similarly rogue-ish focused Star Wars games. My hype was pretty excessive by the time I sat down to play Outlaws for the very first time, and after 45 hours and two months to finish much of the game, I can safely say it lived up to my expectations more often than it didn’t. While fans at home missed out on Patton Oswalt’s hosting of Lucasfilm’s publishing-focused SDCC panel, there was still plenty of excitement to be had over the new reveals, from two The Acolyte tie-in novels, one featuring Vernestra Rwoh and Master Indara, the next Volume of The Art of The High Republic, Marvel’s Fear of the Jedi comic to close out The High Republic initiative, and Star Wars: Outlaws’ Art of book, and more! Deeper Glimpse of Star Wars Outlaws Gameplay Stirs Hype and Hope

While we’re getting closer and closer to August 30, the release date of Star Wars Outlaws, everything I keep seeing, especially today’s new footage from the Ubisoft Forward 2024 showcase, makes August feel so much further away! We got two new sets of footage, the first being a general gameplay overview that’s almost 4 minutes long (see above!), and then there’s the lengthy 10 minute slice (see below the cut), which gives us a better look at specifics, like the heads-up-display (HUD), the very seamless transitions from ships to planets, and the “Experts” system. So check out the lengthier section and some impressions below! Continue reading “Deeper Glimpse of Star Wars Outlaws Gameplay Stirs Hype and Hope”

Star Wars Outlaws Story Trailer Promises Grand Adventures, Reveals August 30 Release Date!

After the gameplay walkthrough video released alongside its announcement back in June 2023, I didn’t really need to see more to be convinced I was going to get Star Wars Outlaws when it releases. The latest lowdown on the game, a story trailer, an August 30 release date, and pre-order bonuses came in handy for my confirmation bias about how good this game really looks. The tenacious Kay Vess, her adorable merqaal Nix, and enforcer droid ND-5 mixing it up with the galactic underworld elite, all to secure her freedom to start a new life, and doing so in scoundrel-ific fashion, visiting locales like Akiva, Toshara, and returning to her home of Cantonica’s Canto Bight…what more could you want?! Head below for a little breakdown of the trailer, a few screengrabs, details on the pre-order options (and how much they’ll set you back credits-wise), and more! SDCC 2023: Star Wars Outlaws Panel

With the gameplay video living rent free in my head every minute of every day, suffice to say Star Wars Outlaws is one of my most anticipated video games and Star Wars pieces of media. An open-world game where you mix it up with the criminal underworld as fresh but determined Kay Vess, alongside her cute little friend Nix? If the final game is even an ounce like its opening video, we’re in for a treat. At SDCC 2023, Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment had a panel about the upcoming release, sharing details like the new criminal syndicate made for the game or there may be cooking, while also showing off the video above, where we see atmospheric video of the new planet Toshara and Kay voice actress Humberly Gonzalez filming mo-cap. Head below for all extra nuggets gleaned from the panel! Continue reading “SDCC 2023: Star Wars Outlaws Panel”

Star Wars: Outlaws Announced, Set for 2024 Release

First announced in January of 2021, Massive Entertainment’s upcoming open-world Star Wars game was officially revealed as Star Wars: Outlaws at Xbox Games Showcase 2023 with a slick CGI cinematic trailer (seen below). I’ve always enjoyed these, and often got very hyped by them back in the day, but I’ve since cooled on them and always wait for gameplay before getting too excited for a game. We didn’t have too wait long from the first trailer thankfully, as the Ubisoft Forward 2023 showcase delivered our first glimpse of scoundrel Kay Vess and (the cutest) Nix in action for Outlaws and it looks absolutely incredible, combing Grand Theft Auto and No Man’s Sky and putting it into a Star Wars game. It’s like something out of a dream, as I’ve been hoping for something like this for a long time and my hype for its release is through the atmosphere. You can see the full gameplay walkthrough above, as it’d be rude to hide it below the cut, but there some additional details below! Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment Working on Open World Game, Starting New Era of Star Wars Gaming

Massive Entertainment and Lucasfilm Games Making Open-World Star Wars Game

I’ll still never forget when LucasArts being shuttered was announced; it left me gutted, especially knowing a game like Star Wars 1313 would never see the light of day. Yoda says not to mourn, but celebrate one’s life in the Force, so I cherished all the memories they’d given us and set my eyes on the future, hoping this news meant developers, like say Naughty Dog, could bring us a thrilling Star Wars single-player gaming experience (and with Amy Hennig’s cancelled game, we almost did!). Then Lucasfilm announced the licensing deal with publisher EA and I was still optimistic, but it ended up being less than ideal. With the reveal of Lucasfilm Games returning to its roots, I didn’t want to get my hopes up again, but a new era is truly beginning, as the licensing deal isn’t as exclusive anymore with eyes towards a more open future, beginning with Ubisoft’s Massive developing an open-world Star Wars game!
