It feels like Star Wars is entering its villain era, from taking over the Empire State Building, the Tales of the Empire announcement, even the upcoming The Acolyte showing the rise of the darkness, and now this announcement: the Inquisitors comic miniseries! Written by Rodney Barnes with art by Ramon Rosanas, Inquisitors is out July 3, following the group of Jedi hunters after their next target, a new Jedi named Tensu Run! Head below for a look at the full cover and a few variants, as well as some quick thoughts about the announcement!
Whoever came up with the logo for the miniseries, bravo, it’s one of the more unique and interesting ones, as I love how it incorporated the Inquisitorious’ iconic spinning saber into it!! Overall, I love the potential in the series to show us plenty of familiar faces, all depending on when it takes place of course, though I hope it goes beyond the surface of the organization, like Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade, and gives us more time with the Inquisitors themselves, digging into why they’re there and how they feel about their new lives. From Star Wars Rebels, the Jedi games, the Darth Vader – Dark Lord of the Sith comic series, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Inquisitors have made their presence known in the post Order 66 galaxy, whether they are tracking down Jedi or attempting to kill Vader from within, it’s been a joy to have them featured so often. May 4’s Tales of the Empire will give us even more insight into their workings, one half of the shorts feature Barriss Offee as she navigates the organization, and I hope this comic provides a similar level of inspection.
As for potential Inquisitors, there’s quite a list now: the Second Sister aka Trilla Suduri, as seen in Jedi: Fallen Order; Third Sister aka Reva Sevander, as seen in Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Ninth Sister, from both the Darth Vader comic and later both Jedi games; the Fifth Brother, first in Rebels and later in OBW; the Grand Inquisitor, who returns to screens in Tales of the Empire with Jason Issac also back to voice him (!!) after he was played by Rupert Friend in live-action; Fourth Sister aka Lyn, introduced and not used much in OBW; Seventh Sister, played wonderfully by Sarah Michelle Gellar in Rebels; and the Eighth Brother, also from Rebels, to name the few we’ve met over the years now. On the flip side, I like this will be a new Jedi they’ll be hunting, Tensu Run, and I’ll be interested to learn more about them, if they are human or not and what plans they have about bringing the Jedi Order back which alerts Darth Vader to their machinations.
Rodney Barnes’ first Star Wars content was the Lando – Double or Nothing miniseries and he’s since been on adaptation duty, with both The Mandalorian and Ahsoka comics, so I’m glad he’s back to making his own mark with this series. Artist Ramon Rosanas was a skilled presence in the earlier days of the Star Wars (Vol. 2) comic, which launched in 2022, and I’ll always look forward to him returning to the Saga.
