The Mandalorian won’t be alone on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+, as Diego Luna will return to play Cassian Andor in a spy thriller TV series set prior to Rogue One (for obvious reasons…)! This is arguably more exciting to me than The Mandalorian, but we’re getting two live-action TV series, so no complaints here! More details from the press release and some extra thoughts below! UPDATE: Here’s our review of the series’ three episode premiere; follow along here for more reviews as the series airs!
The series is currently being described as, “The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.” I expect this will follow more in the grittier vein of Rogue One, showing a very boots on the ground approach to the Rebellion’s sneakier attempts to rid the galaxy of the Empire. And with a charismatic lead like Diego Luna, who already made Cassian a well-rounded and intriguing character, what’s not to like?! Here’s what Luna had to say about coming back:
“Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me. I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”
While this next bit is an assumption, I expect an announcement of Alan Tudyk coming back as K-2SO isn’t too far behind this one, because those two certainly come as a pair, and his humor will be more than welcomed into the spy world of Star Wars. Of course the bigger questions are, who else will we see, considering this is set in, “…formative years of the Rebellion?” Does it mean more live-action Mon Mothma from Genevieve O’Reilly, as she even reprised the role in Rebels? General Draven wouldn’t be out of the question, considering he was barking orders at Cassian in Rogue One. Mayhaps a younger Leia (Millie Bobby Brown, Millie Bobby Brown, please!) and Bail Organa (I mean, Jimmy Smits is ageless so he could totally come back)? And since Cassian is a Fulcrum agent, him running into another Fulcrum like say, AHSOKA TANO, could always be possible. How about Cassian working alongside Enfys Nest at one point, bringing her into the Rebellion proper!? The possibilities for a show set in this time and era is, as you can tell, quite endless, making me even more excited for this. So The Mandalorian can focus on bringing in new faces while Cassian’s show can bring back all the faces we know and love; sounds good to me!
Since this will go into production next year, I wouldn’t expect to see this until sometime in 2020, so hopefully the in-production Mandalorian can be out in time for Disney+’s launch late next year. For more updates on the newly minted Disney+, sign up for updates from its new site!
