Final Skeleton Crew Trailer Hits Those 80’s Vibes

Just over 2 and half months since the first trailer, and a little over a month until its premiere, Lucasfilm has unleashed the synth-heavy, 80’s throwback final trailer for Skeleton Crew! And yes, your ears are not deceiving you, that’s a Huttese cover of Peter Schilling’s “Major Tom (Coming Home)”, which my mileage is at least varying with. Check out the neat retro poster and some new details we’ve learned below!

In an interview with Jon Watts and Chris Ford, co-creators of Skeleton Crew, they talk about the heavy Amblin adventure film and old pirate serial influences, but they also cover Jude Law’s excitement about being in the project, how they had some of Nick Frost’s SM-33 dialogue pre-recorded so they could play it on set, and the process of picking the lead child actors. I found the last bit the most interesting, as they shifted some of the character traits as they casted, saying Kyriana Kratter brought a quiet thoughtfulness to KB they leaned into or how they let Robert Timothy Smith’s natural comedic talent seep through for Neel (who is not an Ortolan aka Max Rebo’s species, they confirmed). They also revealed Fern, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, is the daughter of someone in the government, which would be her mother, Kerry Condon’s Fara. I’m curious if it’s just local governance or New Republic, as this does take place during the time of the other Mando-verse shows, and how that could potentially find a way to connect this show to the larger story. Fern and Kratter’s KB are friends, while Neel is Wim’s, played by Ravi Cabot-Conyers. He seems to be our lead of the four youngsters, and even from these trailers it seems apparent why they picked him, as his exuberance and quick to jump into things without thinking is all classic adventure movie stuff. His father Wendle is played by Tunde Adebimpe, and it seems like he and Fern’s mother might have some screentime together, so I’ll be interested to see what’s happening with the adults while the kids are galavanting away in a whole other galaxy….

At least that’s been the going theory, that the Onyx Cinder they find takes them not out in the galaxy we all know and love, but the nearby one Grand Admiral Thrawn was found waiting patiently to leave in Ahsoka. It would explain why everything looks so different, yet Star Wars-y, in the places the main kids go and end up teaming with Jude Law’s Jod Na Nawood. Also, it might explain why the article with the two creators was edited to remove a line about how the creatures and citizens of where the kids end up don’t recognize the name of their home planet…. The plot thickens!

We won’t have to wait long, the 2-episode premiere hits Disney+ on December 3, and our reviews will follow so come back to the Manor to check those out!
