I never thought I’d have to type, let alone be excited and hyped to do so, the words, “Star Wars Holiday Special,” but when Lego is attached and there’s actually a fun premise, full of winks and nods to the original mess of a special and all over the Saga, suddenly all is right with the galaxy. On November 17, 42 years to the day of the original special’s release, The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special will release on Disney+, taking us past The Rise of Skywalker, and all over the Saga, as Rey, Finn, Poe, and Rose try to celebrate Life Day with Chewie and his family, but Rey’s dive into the mysteries of the Force pulls her and BB-8 through different eras and moments in the Saga as she rushes to get back to her friends. If you’ve never seen the original Holiday Special, I would never tell you to watch it, nor watch it before seeing this, but that eye-sore of a Special will be referenced so it might aid in your enjoyment…might, as it’s a TRUE journey to get through the original sober, so make a responsible drinking game out of it (one can find it if they know where to look COUGH COUGH here COUGH COUGH). It’s funny (due to how bad it is), bizarre, and hard to comprehend why it was made, but watching it helped me and a team win Star Wars trivia night once, so there’s that.
This new, 45-minute Holiday Special shouldn’t be such a struggle, as Lego constantly puts out fun and hilarious content and, as executive producer Josh Rimes says, they’re going for vibes similar to, “‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles,’ ‘Christmas Vacation’ and old Burl Ives musical cheer.” Also, I love the idea Rey will get to interact with characters all over the Saga, and even having multiple versions of themselves interact with themselves, should provide lots of entertaining interactions and absurdity. Rimes seems to hint we’ll get to see Rey teach a younger Luke a thing or two, much like he taught her in The Last Jedi.
Unsurprisingly enough, there’s a way to get a preview of what’s to come, as the upcoming Lego Advent Calendar was made in concert with the Special.
I’m eager to see a trailer for this, which we’ll have as soon as they drop one, otherwise make sure to come back to the Manor for a review once The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special hits Disney+ November 17!
