There are a lot of clichés that you can say about the past and I’m sure you’ve heard a ton, but if you’re like me (or anybody in the galaxy), there’s only one that seems universally true: you can never totally escape the past. Han Solo and Chewbacca learn that the hard way in this adventure, as they both seek out the past and part of their past seeks them out! After getting quite a few credits for helping bust an Authority funded slavery ring, Han and Chewbacca should have been living the high life. Unfortunately, neither are great with credits, and they squander them on celebrations, bad deals, and failed ventures. It is time again for them to be on the look out for a new job. Han runs into an old friend, Alexsandr Badure, who offers them the chance to find the lost treasure of Xim the Despot. Onboard a ship called the Queen of Ranroon, one of Xim the Despot’s, two pilots learned of the existence of a massive treasure. They reported that information to Badure, who hires Han and Chewbacca to seek that treasure out.

The treasure is hidden on a backwater planet called Dellalt. The few humans who live on Dellalt are of Tionese origin, which we will visit in later Legendary Adventures, but for now we must remember that Dellalt is mostly known for a semi-legal mining ring that operates under little supervision. The miners want to do better for themselves, and don’t really care whom they hurt in the process. As Han Solo and a thrown together crew chase the treasure, they come upon Dellalt. Unfortunately, the miners disable the Falcon and take her into the mines to find the treasures of Xim.

This leads Han, Chewbacca, and the crew to trek across the miles and miles of barren wastelands of Dellalt to find some way into the mines and reclaim Han’s ship. Along the way, they meet a group of in-bred humans named the Survivors. Before the crew discovered the survivors, nobody knew about their existence, mostly because they would kill anybody who discovered them. Thankfully, Han’s good nature shines out again, and they reveal that they hold the key to unlocking the treasure of Xim!

All they have to do in order to unlock the treasure? Well, find the Falcon, defeat the miners, succeed in not succumbing to the traps in the maze, and escape with their lives! No problem, right? Not only has Han’s crew faced rough terrain, other treasure hunters, and traps, they must also face a reawakened Republic army! The novel doesn’t get into too much detail about the origin or history of this Republic army,  and they are mostly easily dispatched. Remember, this book takes place twenty years after the end of the Clone Wars – this aged army stands no chance against modern weaponry, especially running at low power decades later. Maybe the most interesting note about the defunct Republic army is that they are droids. Apparently, the Republic utilized droids in their fight against the Separatist droid army. This book, written two decades before the Prequels, wouldn’t have the ability to comment on the Republic much at all, so it’s not a surprise that the details are sparse. we don’t learn much about them, but it does lead to some interesting questions. Did the Republic seek alternative ways to fight the CIS? Were some moved by the plight of Clone Troopers enough to seek a different type of army?

As I noted earlier, it wasn’t just that Han was chasing an ancient treasure, the past chased Han: Gallandro, the gunslinger which Han defeated in a duel in his previous adventure, is out for revenge against Han, wanting to settle the score. He follows Han to Dellalt, staying behind the crew as they venture into the maze. Whether or not Han killed Greedo by shooting first, Han doesn’t really want to fight, let alone murder anybody. Thankfully, the treasure cave takes care of his moral dilemma when Gallandro can’t navigate the maze and is killed by some traps.

As Han and the crew finally find the treasure of Xim, they think that they have struck it rich. The technology was, during Xim the Despot’s reign, extremely valuable and dangerous. Societies back in Xim’s day would and have killed for it; in the age of the Empire, such technology has become obsolete. Unfortunately for Han and Chewbacca, the treasure has been rendered valueless. But Han will soon find one more way to strike it rich when a lieutenant from the Rebel Alliance comes knocking…tune in next time to see how Han feels about the fledgling resistance movement against the Empire!
