Luke’s Jedi Academy is in danger! As Luke hovers between life and death, the Solo kids are endangered and a rogue Jedi has taken a superweapon to battle the Empire – what else could go wrong? Join the Legendary Adventures as we read Champions of the Force!
What do you do when you’re on the brink of rebuilding an ancient Order devoted to peace and justice, but one of your most promising students knocks you into a coma? Well, if you’re Luke Skywalker, you don’t take this lying down. Well, you kinda do, as your body is stuck. But mentally? You don’t. Mentally, you go to battle against the Empire and fight for the soul of the entire new Jedi Order!
As Exar Kun’s control over Jedi student Kyp Durron grows, Kyp uses his newly controlled Sun Crusher to wage a one-man war against the Empire. His goal? To find his brother, who was last known to be serving at the Imperial Academy and free him. On his search, Kyp destroys the Cauldron Nebula, an act of pure evil committed only through the treachery of the spirit of Exar Kun. Kun, an ancient Sith Lord, has wiggled his way into the heart of Kyp Durron, causing him to act out his worst tendencies – one of which includes mortally wounding his Master, Luke. Now Kyp turns his attention to Carida, where he knows his brother is located. After a tense stand-off with the Imperial leader of Carida’s academy, Kyp forces its sun to go supernova…but unfortunately, this act takes the life of his brother, turning Kyp into the one ultimately responsible for his brother’s death.
After the destruction of the Caridan sun, it seems as if things are looking up for the Jedi. Mara Jade and Lando Calrissian form a smuggler’s bond, one which will strengthen their resistance against the Empire, pulling Mara even deeper into Luke and the Jedi Order’s radius. Han Solo and Chewbacca lead an attack on the Maw Cluster, which leads to the capture of the station, but not the scientists. Even Luke’s spirit is returned to his body, forcing him to rethink his way of Mastery.
All of this causes the spirit of Exar Kun to return to Yavin IV to confront Luke. Kun can’t seem to get to Luke directly, so he tries to possess yet another student, a young Jedi named Streen. Kun’s plan of attack is simple: destroy Luke, thereby destroying the Jedi Order. Thankfully, the other Jedi students, who felt like they were long overpassed by Kyp Durron, do show their capability for being great Jedi, defeating Kun before he can reach Luke.
But it turns out that Kun really wasn’t the greatest problem for the Jedi. Leia soon learns that her child, Anakin Solo, has also been selected as a target by the Empire, specifically by the former leader of the Caridan Imperial Academy. Oh, and Han Solo and Chewbacca’s attack on the Maw Cluster didn’t lead to a destruction of their weapons, as those scientists who escaped ended up escaping on yet another prototype Death Star. And Kyp Durron is still in control of the Sun Crusher, and is still engaging in his darkest fantasies. All of these events come together to one climax: Kyp Durron, freed from Exar Kun’s control, wants to destroy both the Maw Cluster and the Sun Crusher, planning to send both into a black hole. After Leia saves the lives of her children, Kyp and Luke manage to destroy the Sun Crusher in a black hole.
Everything works out, right? Well, not quite – a student named Corran Horn has been in the background the entire time, and his story suggests that (somehow) even more has been going on behind the scenes…
