The galaxy is turning against Jacen Solo. After he and Cha Niathal performed a coup, taking over the Galactic Alliance, he has been leading with an iron fist. From assaults on Kashyyyk to putting down rebellions at Fondor, Caedus has reignited a galaxy’s worth of conflict. His family has turned against, vowing to use their power as Jedi to stop him. His political opponents, and even supporters, are turning against him, feeding information to other sources. As Caedus needs allies, he turns to the Imperial Remnant, the very body his parents vowed to destroy.
Dark Lady of the Sith Lumiya is dead, killed by the hands of Luke Skywalker. She had, or so Luke thought, killed Mara Jade Skywalker. Why then, if Mara’s killer has been killed, does Ben Skywalker not feel peace? He can’t help but feel the nagging feeling in the back of his mind that perhaps his uncle, Jacen Solo, now the Sith Lord Darth Caedus, killed her. He begins an investigation with a Galactic Alliance Guard named Lon Shevu in secret, as Jacen controls the Alliance and the GAG. During their investigation into the death of Mara, Ben encounters her Force ghost. In their reunion, beside sharing their love, Mara shares a material clue pointing to Jacen as her killer.
Jaina Solo knows, too, she will need to defeat her brother. After his brutal attack on the planet Kashyyyk, Jaina has decided it is finally time to put a stop to the Sith Lord. At this time, though, she believes Jacen is much stronger than her, so she looks to begin more training. Instead of seeking out more training from the Jedi, she seeks out Boba Fett, who would train her in the ways of Mandalorian battle tactics. As she believes she is becoming the sword necessary to end the life of her brother, she is finding herself seeking out even more brutal fighting styles than she may have ever known before. Eventually, she will follow Boba and the Mandalorians into battle against the Galactic Alliance led by her brother.
Even Caedus’s political supporters, or former supporters, have turned against Jacen. First, he loses the support of people who fought with him before, even in recent political movements. Cha Niathal, Caedus’s co-Chief of State, tries to remove Caedus from power legally, but a contingent of people loyal to Caedus prevent her from removing him from power. Second, Caedus is opposed by those whom he and his family have fought against for decades. Caedus turns to the Imperial Remnant for help, offering GA aid if the Remnant would fight alongside them. Grand Admiral Pallaeon supports Caedus, but with some hesitation. He sets up Admiral Daala to keep an eye out for Caedus, and Daala takes the opportunity to set up a treaty of sorts with the Mandalorians. Pallaeon does offer to help Caedus in battle against the Fondorians, but does not condone the level to which Caedus ramps up the battle. Despite overcoming the Fondorian forces, Caedus decides to press the attack and do more damage to the Fondorians than necessary in an effort to pacify them for all time. Pallaeon stands against that, and is shot by Tahiri Veila, dying on the bridge of his Star Destroyer, leaving the Imperial Remnant without a leader for a time.
After Pallaeon is killed, Jaina Solo, Boba Fett, and the Mandalorians arrive at a call from Daala, trying to decimate the remainder of Caedus’s forces. The Mandalorians are successful in infiltrating Caedus’s ship, and come close to killing him in battle. The Mandos are held back by Boba Fett, who decides it is more important Jaina kills her brother than some random Mandalorians. But this is not the only defeat Caedus suffers. Len records a confession from Caedus about the death of Mara, and that recording is brought back to the Solos and Skywalkers. The family, now with definitive proof of Caedus’s turn and murder, definitively moves the Jedi Order against Jacen and the GAG.
The tide is set for the endgame battle against Caedus. Luke Skywalker also has a conversation with Mara Jade, and Ben is determined to stop Caedus. Jaina meets a Jedi who is also a Mandalorian named Bardan Jusik, who tells her that she must do all she can against Caedus. Their new invincible determination will take them straight into the heart of darkness…
