The tensions with Corellia are at an all-time high, but the tensions within the Solo family are even higher! As the Corellians try to curry favor with the Hapans, will the galaxy be torn apart by the darkness growing at its heart? As tensions with Corellia grow, both the Galactic Alliance and Corellia are seeking to curry new allies and dissuade new treaties from being formed. As Corellia becomes more and more anti-Alliance, they seek to find new allies among those who have traditionally not been a part of the Republic before. Unfortunately for them, most of the galaxy is not very sympathetic to their cause, and most reject their calls for help. One such opponent to their independence is the Hapan Consortium – well, at least, officially they are. The Queen Mother rejects their calls for help, but some within the Consortium would prefer they would join with Corellia against the Alliance. Corellia, though maintaining a semi-connection with Han Solo and Leia Organa-Solo, hides their plan to take in the Consortium: they plan to offer subversive elements within the Consortium weapons in exchange for the assassination of Queen Mother Tenel Ka.
This plan turns into a cacophony of errors and misunderstandings. Bounty hunter Aurra Sing is dispatched to Hapes to try to kill Tenel Ka, but she and her hired thugs are stopped by Leia and Han. Unfortunately, the Hapan guards believe Han and Leia were part of the plan – bolstered by the widespread knowledge of Han’s heritage – and they flee. In the chaos, they are forced to take Aurra Sing in tow. With some help from Jaina, their daughter, and Zekk, who still shares a sort of connection with Jaina after the Swarm War, they reveal the mastermind behind the attack and send that information to the Hapan Mother. There, they meet with Jagged Fel, who says he, like Thrawn before him, has been exiled from the Chiss Ascendancy and he is seeking out Alema Rar.
Alema Rar, on the other hand, is blissfully (and angrily) unaware of Jagged Fel’s plans for her. Instead, she is consumed by the need for revenge and seeks out the death of anybody who bears the name Skywalker or Solo, starting with Jacen Solo. Unbeknownst to much of the galaxy, Jacen has continued his conversation with the World Brain, hoping the World Brain’s knowledge and tactical skills would be enough to help him bring the galaxy to bear under his own powerful watch. Alema, in an attempt to kill Jacen, ends up destroying the World Brain instead.
After losing a powerful ally, Jacen looks to solidify his stance against the Corellians. He learns of the botched assassination attempt against Tenel Ka, which causes him to send out an arrest warrant against his own parents. He then devises a trap for Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade-Skywalker, leaking information about Lumiya that suggests she has a hand in the goings-on of the Galactic Alliance Guard. Though he denies knowing who Lumiya is, Luke begins to grow wary of Jacen and seeks to bring his son, Ben, back under his supervision instead of Jacen’s. Luke and Mara head to the Roqoo Depot, where they battle Lumiya, but she is able to escape with her life. Even when Alema Rar, burning with rage, joins the battle, she is unable to turn the tide and everyone escapes. Luke and Mara find more information on Lumiya, and it is designed to look like she has been targeting Ben Skywalker – hiding the involvement of Jacen and their relationship as Master and Apprentice. When a battle erupts between the Corellians and the Hapans, Ben tries to arrest Han, still following Jacen’s belief.
This leads Luke to believe Jacen has indeed turned to the Dark Side, and his search for the dark man in his visions is renewed. Han and Leia are on the run, and they are chased by the own family. How do these families cope in exile, and when the Galactic Alliance they helped create becomes even worse than the very Empire that they sought to destroy?
