Luminous, the mysterious upcoming publishing project, has been teased by Lucasfilm since Star Wars Celebration Chicago 2019 in April, with nary a detail since. We were originally promised it would be revealed in January 2020, but several reporters and journalists have been invited to a reveal event for Project Luminous on February 24, 2020. The vague “January” promise always felt like it wouldn’t happen, so it’s no surprise it would happen another month, and regardless it’s really nice to have a set and solid date. Head below the cut for what little details we received so far, and what some of the rumors point towards.
“The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things. Until…” has been the most we’ve really gotten officially regarding Luminous. It involves the following writers: Charles Soule, Claudia Gray, Daniel José Older, Cavan Scott, and Justina Ireland. It involves the following publishers: Del Rey, Marvel, Disney-Lucasfilm Publishing, and IDW.
As for speculation, as I mentioned in my review of The Rise of Kylo Ren #2 where we get a reference to the “High Republic” era, Luminous would seem to be set then, 300-400 before the Prequels. You can read more details at Hungarian fan-site Ziro, but it sounds like a Marvel-fication of Star Wars past in some regards (for better or worse), and it might even include a video game. UPDATE: One day after posting this, Star Wars #2 (Vol. 2) included another reference to the High Republic era, written by Charles Soule, and even mentions something called “Operation Starlight,” a name similar to Luminous, no? The Operation in question even seems to line up with stuff from Ziro’s report, and with a third issue from the comic launching TWO days after the reveal on 2/24, it’s looking less and less like a coincidence.
We won’t need to speculate much longer, as we’re already less then a month away from Project Luminous’ official reveal on February 24, 2020.
