While EA Games lost the exclusive rights to Star Wars games, that doesn’t mean they won’t still be behind some new titles, which Lucasfilm Games and EA confirmed with the news Respawn Entertainment will be leading the charge of new Star Wars games for EA. They have three games in active development, starting with a new Star Wars: Jedi entry, aka a sequel to Jedi – Fallen Order, and two unnamed games, a FPS (or first-person shooter) and a strategy game. For those curious if there’s still an opportunity for Battlefront III, it looks like that’s completely axed and Respawn will exclusively be behind new Star Wars games. It is disappointing Lucasfilm Games didn’t take a moment to address any of the Star Wars Eclipse controversary, instead choosing to announce more games and ignore it, but hopefully there’s a time and place for that soon. Regardless, head below for more details on the upcoming games.
A sequel for Jedi: Fallen Order has felt like a foregone conclusion for some time, but it’s nice to hear it officially announced and on its way. There’s a rather solid game, with great performances, with the first entry so there’s plenty of room for Respawn to grow the title. Some hopes for a Jedi 2: Cal isn’t the only playable character, maybe Merrin, as I felt like he was the game’s weakest link; a fast travel system; clearer maps; maybe other weapons; and stealth and non-lethal options, definitely my biggest gripes with the first as its action-forward, always killing came at odds with the whole ‘hiding’ aspect to the story and being a Jedi. As for when to expect Jedi 2? Q4 2022, as the current rumors state, which would likely mean November/December release ahead of The Mandalorian Season 3.
The FPS game, with Peter Hirschmann (executive producer on Star Wars Battlefront’s original entries) as game director, comes from the same team behind Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, a VR-exclusive game, but I highly doubt this will be VR, as they’ll want this in as many hands as possible and they didn’t specify it in the announcement.
And lastly, the strategy game is technically developed by Bit Reactor, a team made up of devs behind franchises like XCOM and Civilization (big names in the strategy game categories), with Respawn producing the title.
No idea on when we’ll see anything from either games or how long they’ve already been in development, but we’ll bring you more once we learn it!
