Star Wars Resistance’s Second and Final Season Airs October, First Trailer Arrives

After Star Wars Resistance’s first season finale, I had some rather high hopes for the show, as its ending brought with it a whole wealth of possibilities as the Colossus and Team Fireball went mobile following Hosnian Cataclysm. From the trailer above, it looks like the show will be fulfilling my biggest wishes for its second season when it returns October 6, which makes the news this will also be its final season all the more bittersweet. At least they gave us another stunning trailer to help lessen the blow of the news, right? A few thoughts on the trailer, the show ending, and details on the new cast below!

While the Colossus dealing with supply problems doesn’t sound terribly exciting, the resulting power struggle that might come from having the pirates aboard could have some intrigue. The most exciting stuff from the trailer is seeing the team go out and explore a whole host of new worlds, staving off the First Order’s expansion while the main Resistance forces regroup and rebuild to fight again. Out of all the newer characters on the FO side, Agent Tierny was my favorite and had the biggest canvas to explore, so seeing she’ll play a bigger role (and I doubt Kylo Ren will make her kill herself, as much as the trailer makes us want to think he will) is a huge plus, while Tam Ryvora’s slide into the FO’s side could be fascinating if given the right amount of screentime. In the announcement, this season is said to take place during The Last Jedi/prior to The Rise of Skywalker, but I imagine Captain Phasma won’t be long for the show despite her appearance in the trailer because the announcement also calls Kylo the Supreme Leader, which by then she’s fallen to Finn…unless this season will prove she survived, again. Overall, I’m excited to see them use the Colossus as a mobile base, if Opeepit will get a new floor scrubber, more Neeku antics, all these cool new creature interactions, CB-23 being the hero the show needs/deserves again, and hopefully more ship action. UPDATE: Seems one of the new FO trooper designs glimpsed in the trailer is actually from an unused concept art piece from The Force Awakens…nothings ever thrown away, folks!

As for it ending, there’s no way to know if the season will deliver on the thrills from this trailer, but when the show looks like it’s improving on all levels, this is a disappointing development, even if I was more attached to Rebels at this point in its run. Why will it end after only two seasons? The answer is likely both complicated and never to be officially answered. Could it be that the viewer numbers weren’t there? And was that because marketing never felt like it was trying to support it anyways/the timeslot was too late for its target audience (despite earlier streaming options)? Is it due to the impending launch of Disney + in November? It was originally only planned for two seasons anyways? A mixture of all the above? In the end, there’s no point worrying over the why, so let’s just enjoy it while it lasts!

From the official site for the new cast:

“Joining the cast for the epic conclusion are guest stars Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike) as Ax Tagrin; Daveed Diggs (from the original Broadway cast of the musical Hamilton) as Norath Kev; Matthew Wood (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as Kylo Ren, and Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) as the Aeosian Queen.”

Those are some big new names! Lucy Lawless is a cool addition and I enjoy Matthew Wood’s take on Kylo already, so once again some quality talent joining the already expansive and great cast! In fact, it’s a real shame, maybe the biggest, that this large, diverse cast only has one more season to shine.

We’ll have reviews for Star Wars Resistance season two once the show returns in October!
