The new publishing venture, The High Republic, is about to move into a second round of books. Before that, I wanted to revisit all of the first round of releases, from comics to novels to picture books, and talk about some of the more unique aspects of the era, with reflections on what I really like from the series and what I’d like to see more of moving forward!

Only a month after the initial launch of The High Republic, our next novel arrives in the form of Claudia Gray’s The High Republic – Into the Dark. The young adult novel takes place roughly at the same time as the opening novels, but it’s a side adventure with far reaching implications that opens up the era to new faces, enemies, and stories. For The High Republic, beyond comics, graphic novels, manga, and book covers, plenty of its events and characters may never been seen in a visual medium, so Lucasfilm teamed up with Eastham Studios for a series of digital shorts introducing fans to characters in the initiative, starting with A Test of Courage’s Vernestra “Vern” Rwoh! Also out today is the first excerpt from Claudia Gray’s young adult novel, The High Republic – Into the Dark, where we meet some of the colorful cast you’ll get to spend tons of time with in the book! In an unfortunate but completely understandable move, considering the unprecedented situation facing the world, the launch of The High Republic publishing initiative has been delayed until January 2021. This news seemed inevitable after last week’s updated Star Wars comic solicitations for August did not include a single issue of The High Republic’s comic series, and delaying the whole initiative since the comics couldn’t come out in time shows how important every medium is in telling this new and exciting story. As sad as this development might be, a note included with the official site’s blog post about the delay, written by creative director of Lucasfilm Publishing Michael Siglain, offered some tantalizing teases of what’s to come. Since the announcement of the upcoming landmark High Republic publishing initiative, there’s been relative radio silence despite the promise of more details. That all changed on Thursday, when the official site began a new series of articles digging into upcoming new era. After nearly a year of waiting and teases, Project Luminous has finally been revealed: The High Republic publishing program, a series of stories set 200 years before the prequels, spread across novels and comics, spearheaded by authors Charles Soule, Claudia Gray, Daniel José Older, Justina Ireland, and Cavan Scott. Beginning in August, the High Republic era kicks off with Light of the Jedi, a novel by Charles Soule which will set up the story and proliferate across other novel, comics, and more yet to come.
