Star Wars Comics January 2024 Solicitations

January 2024’s Star Wars comics solicitations aren’t interested in your New Year’s resolutions or aspirations, as they have a distinct air of finality to them whether you want them to or not, seeming to promise the era of comics set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi might be winding down. But we should focus on the here and now, as Qui-Gon Jinn would say, and January’s comics have quite the bounty, from the giant, big finale to the Bounty Hunters series (see, things are ending!), a look at Marchion Ro’s victory lap after Starlight Beacon’s fall, another Visions comic to enjoy, and so much more! Artfully Done: The Essential Legends Thrawn Collection: Legendary Adventures Pit Stop

On June 15, 2021, now-Random House Worlds released the first wave of what they were calling the Essential Legends Collection. Reasons for the Essential Legends Collection were threefold: it was a way to get Legends novels back on the shelves, and for some, with new versions (trade paperback instead of hardcover or mass market editions) with new audiobooks; it was a way to help new readers navigate the world of the extremely large franchise library; and it’s a way to resell some older books. Most readers who came into the fandom since 2014-2015 would only really only have one consistent way to purchase Legends novels: mass market paperbacks, at the whim of the stores who still sold books. (I know I personally would avoid mass market as much as possible.) With the Essential Legends Collection, new readers can be introduced to stories they might have missed and familiar readers can experience these books in better formats. Specifically, with the upcoming release of Ahsoka, readers may be curious to read more about Thrawn, one of the main antagonists in the show. This article will give a short synopsis of the five books published under the Essential Legends Collection banner, with a short note about the canon books about Thrawn and the Legends novels that have yet to be reprinted under the banner. Canon Novel Review: Thrawn Ascendancy – Lesser Evil

Thrawn Ascendancy Lesser Evil Review Mynock Manor

Slight Spoiler Review –

Seven months after its second entry, Timothy Zahn’s latest Thrawn-centric trilogy of novels, Thrawn Ascendancy, ends with Lesser Evil. Much like the finale of his last, though loosely connected trilogy of Thrawn novels, Zahn’s Lesser Evil flounders, more concerned with setting up the aforementioned books, once again avoiding character development, punting on answering two trilogies worth of questions, or truly exploring the Chiss’ extensive past, instead continuing Thrawn’s flawless victory status to underwhelming effect across its over expanded page count. Canon Novel Review: Thrawn Ascendancy – Greater Good

Thrawn Ascendancy Greater Good Review Mynock Manor

Slight Spoiler Review –

Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good is the second in the latest trilogy bearing the popular Chiss’ name, written again by Timothy Zahn, exploring the Chiss Ascendancy and the area of space called the Chaos they patrol. Like a lot of middle installments in trilogies, Greater Good falls into several ruts, coasting with characters and focusing on plot movement, leaving readers largely where they were at the end of the first book and potentially saving all the important, impactful stuff for the final installment.
