Without any films to support, the publishing arm of Star Wars, beyond the upcoming The High Republic, is now tying into TV content, which I hope continues for all the upcoming shows! So beginning this fall (and stretching into Spring 2021), likely just before The Mandalorian’s second season premieres on Disney+, a slew of tie-in content for the show will be released, from original adult novels, art books, and even comics. Head below for the Baby Yoda sparse details!
This is just an initial announcement, with more specifics to come, as there’s nary a detail as to what some of the original content will include.
Novels
Adam Christopher will pen the adult novel, The Mandalorian: Original Novel, and it’s exactly that: an original novel. I’ll be curious to see what exactly he’ll weave together from the show, but for now it’s all speculation; but if I did have to speculate, I imagine it’ll focus on a character who will feature prominently in the second season, and if the rumors are true, I imagine that means Boba Fett. Expect more details in the coming months, but for now I have only two hopes for the novel: 1) This is the placeholder title, and it gets a little more specific, though I guess to make it as marketable as possible, this isn’t a bad way to go for a general audience title (2) Baby Yoda gets AT LEAST one POV chapter (or the whole novel is that way, thank you). UPDATE 7/31/20: The Mandalorian: Original Novel has been pushed back to Fall 2021, so likely ahead of the show’s likely third season.
Phil Szostak returns again for “The Art of” book, which we all basically got a preview of in the first season’s credits, so I can’t wait to see more the gorgeous concept art and glimpses of other avenues they considered.
Other novels include:
- The Mandalorian: The Ultimate Visual Guide (DK) by Pablo Hidalgo
- The Mandalorian: Allies & Enemies – Level Two Reader (DLP) by Brooke Vitale
- The Mandalorian: 8×8 Storybook (title to be revealed later) by Brooke Vitale
- The Mandalorian: Junior Novelization by Joe Schreiber
Comics
Both Marvel and IDW will have The Mandalorian inspired comics, but that’s all we know for now. I speculate IDW will either have a miniseries or an issue or two of Star Wars Adventures (Vol. 2) to star Mandalorian-related characters. As for Marvel, I like the idea Marv had regarding the Bounty Hunters series, swapping out the current cast for a Mandalorian-related cast/story (which would greatly help my interest with it), otherwise I’m sure we’ll get a miniseries tie-in, as they typically do.
Without Star Wars Celebration this year, it’s a little less clear when we’ll get updates on all this publishing material, and the upcoming second season of the show, but we’ll have it on the Manor as soon as they release it!
