Buckle Up, Baby, the Solo: A Star Wars Story Trailer is Here!

Solo: A Star Wars Story‘s full trailer dropped today, providing us a glimpse at more of the things we all love and will soon grow to love, like more Wookiees, Lando, L3-37, Qi’ra, Han, the Falcon…and I’m just scratching the surface of this fun looking movie. Check out the theatrical poster and some various thoughts about the trailer below!

The first trailer showed Solo would have a specific style and this second trailer doubles down on it, from the Western sounding opening music, grimy, underworld locations, and small-scale feel. Most importantly, it really makes the movie feel like it’s going to be a lot of fun, even if it means watching Han Solo go from a more idealistic young man to the more cautious, self-centered, jaded smuggler we remember from A New Hope.

Part of that change in young Han seems to be coming from multiple directions, or so Tobias Beckett’s (Woody Harrelson) warning seems to suggest, “Let me give you some advice: Assume everyone will betray you, and you will never be disappointed.” But who shall do the betraying? Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke), Han’s childhood friend? Tobias himself? One of the crew Tobias puts together, like Val (Thandie Newton)? Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany), who we glimpse for the first time in this trailer? All the above? Does this mean Enfys Nest, the masked warrior, recently confirmed to be female, is going to be the least of Han’s worries? Good thing the movie’s out in just over a month so we won’t have to wait long for the answer!

I had hoped we’d get to finally hear Donald Glover speak as Lando and this trailer did not disappoint, be it his smug line about every story Han’s heard about him being true or the lovely bit where he tells Han, “You might wanna buckle up, baby.” He just called Han, “Baby!” Glover is likely to steal this movie at this rate and that’s perfectly alright. We also get to hear and see L3-37 (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) in a bit of action and after checking out the actresses’ series on Amazon, Fleabag, I’m very exciting to see what she brings to the role. Likewise, Qi’ra being the one to introduce Han to Lando, and seemingly out for her own agenda, looks to be a great role for Emilia Clarke, who’s no stranger to overcoming hardships on her own as the Khaleesi.

Honestly, the first few times I watched the first teaser, I wasn’t too sold on Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, but I’ve since changed my feelings towards him and after this trailer I’m all aboard the Conveyex train for Alden! His swagger through several scenes, and obvious disgust with being told to settle into the back seat while someone else flies the Falcon, is a sprinkling of the charisma Alden’s seems to be bringing to the role. Joonas Suotamo is under the fur for Chewbacca and I can’t wait to watch his and Han’s relationship begin, but there seems to be plenty of other awesome things to come with Chewie in the film, including him getting in on the fight scenes and…. a potential moment with his wife, Malla?!? It’s not confirmed, but who else would Chewie give such a lovely little head hug to? And for those wondering, due to Chewie saying he’s 190 years old, that would put this movie roughly 10 years before A New Hope.

Luggage

And then this moment of Chewie carrying luggage for Han and Qi’ra? I about died laughing, and while on closer inspection it might not be luggage, as it was pointed out to me on Twitter, and I wish I had thought of it first, but it could be so funny because it recalls the scene from Spaceballs where Barf and Lone Star are carrying Princess Vespa’s luggage!

Here are a few other things:

  • Don’t forget about the few tie-ins for SoloLast Shot – A Han and Lando Novel, which follows Han and Lando through three time periods, is out 4/17 and we’ll have a review up as soon as possible! There were some excerpts released recently, revealing a scene with Han and baby Ben and the other with Han and Sana Starros at Maz Kanata’s castle. After the film releases in May, Lando: Double or Nothing, a comic miniseries, will begin, while Most Wanted, a story about an even younger Han and Qi’ra, helps fill in their backstories. All the details here!
  • Typically tickets have gone on sale at the same time the theatrical trailer dropped, but doesn’t seem to be the case with Solo. Keep your eyes peeled though, as it’s sure to be sometime soon now!
