Canon Novel Review: Queen’s Hope

Queen's Hope Review Ryan MynockManor

Slight Spoiler Review –

What started as a Padmé-focused endeavor grew larger in its second outing, the “Queen Trilogy” ends with a smaller scope in Queen’s Hope, and while it reined in some issues from the second outing and feels more like the first, this trilogy ends with what feels like half of a good novel. Canon Novel Review: The High Republic – Midnight Horizon

High Republic Midnight Horizon Review Mynock Manor

Spoiler and Spoiler-Free Review

The High Republic – Midnight Horizon, written by Daniel José Older, is the final novel entry in Phase 1, Wave III’s story, and it’s the best overall to date. Focusing on a plot around Corellia and potential Nihil forces, several Jedi characters from Older’s and other luminous authors’ works combine in a tale with new characters and tons of emotion, depth, and exploration of oneself, as there’s coming-of-age, love, and Jedi paths plumbed for some of the best character work of the era yet. The following review is largely spoiler free but there’s a clearly marked spoiler section as well! Continue reading “Canon Novel Review: The High Republic – Midnight Horizon”

Canon Novel Review: The High Republic – Mission to Disaster

High Republic Mission to Disaster Review Mynock Manor 1

Spoiler Free Review –

The High Republic’s first Phase is coming to a close and Mission to Disaster, written by Justina Ireland, is one of the opening novels of the final wave. Focusing on characters Ireland first introduced in the opening wave, the novel deals with Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh trying to save Avon Starros, and other children, when it becomes clear the Nihil have started kidnapping kids to bolster their ranks. Mission to Disaster, never shying away from the ramifications and its deeper subject matters, while adding to fan-favorite characters and building out a convincing ecosystem,  is one of Ireland’s best entries of the era so far. Canon Novel Review: The High Republic – The Fallen Star

High Republic Fallen Star Review Mynock Manor 2

Slight Spoiler Review –

The beginning of the end to The High Republic‘s first Phase of content kicks off with Claudia Gray’s The Fallen Star, a riveting novel full of hope, heartbreak, and terror, that grips you in its tension-filled opening pages and doesn’t let up, offering moments of levity giving readers a breath before pulling them back in. It’s a fitting, important ending to the hope-filled beginning of the era a year ago, setting the stage for what’s yet to come in Phase II and beyond. Canon Novel Review: Thrawn Ascendancy – Lesser Evil

Thrawn Ascendancy Lesser Evil Review Mynock Manor

Slight Spoiler Review –

Seven months after its second entry, Timothy Zahn’s latest Thrawn-centric trilogy of novels, Thrawn Ascendancy, ends with Lesser Evil. Much like the finale of his last, though loosely connected trilogy of Thrawn novels, Zahn’s Lesser Evil flounders, more concerned with setting up the aforementioned books, once again avoiding character development, punting on answering two trilogies worth of questions, or truly exploring the Chiss’ extensive past, instead continuing Thrawn’s flawless victory status to underwhelming effect across its over expanded page count. Novel Review: Life Day Treasury

Life Day Treasury Review Mynock Manor

After two haunting collections of myths and dark legends within the Star Wars universe, George Mann and Grant Griffin, with Cavan Scott joining, bring revelry and cheer in their next outing: Life Day Treasury. A celebration of mid-winter traditions, with a few frights of its own, Life Day Treasury is another excellent entry in this series and a fun change of pace, with more stellar illustrations, making this a book worth sharing around your next Life Day gathering. Canon Audiobook Review: The High Republic – Tempest Runner

Tempest Runner Review Mynock Manor

Non-Spoiler Review

The High Republic: Tempest Runner, an audiobook original written by Cavan Scott and presented by a full cast, centers on Nihil leader Lourna Dee, peeling back her mask and exploring her past, present, and future. Despite some nitpicks with its production, it’s engagingly written and expertly paced, while the cast delivers some compelling and nuanced performances to make for another entertaining audiobook original.
